Spirent Develops Advanced Testing Platform Based on Intel® Atom™ Processor C2000

Eight Core Processor Helps Deliver Higher Performance, Scale with Lower Power Requirements

SUNNYVALE, Calif. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — September 10, 2013 — Spirent Communications, the leader in testing networks, devices and services, today announced the evolution of the Intel® architecture-based Spirent hardware architecture for testing mobile and cloud applications on converged IP and Ethernet networks. Utilizing the Intel® Atom™ processor C2000 product family, Spirent more than doubles its engineering productivity to bring significantly higher performance and reduced power consumption to market faster, with lower customer capital expenses and operational expenses per test port.

To easily test converged IP networks and applications, both network equipment manufacturers and service providers require a highly flexible solution that enables Level 2-7 testing while supporting all relevant LTE, cloud, routing, IPv6 and security protocols. With the ability to flexibly allocate the Intel Atom C2000 processor’s eight cores, Spirent allows test engineers to achieve high performance traffic emulation with nanosecond latency granularity and statistics on every emulated user. This evolution further enhances Spirent’s current Intel architecture which supports converged testing of mobile and cloud applications with security while still testing L2/L3 infrastructure with similar accuracy.

“As service providers consolidate their networks and continue to transition to all-IP and Ethernet technologies and networks, the need to validate these converged systems at a very high scale is critical as so many users are accessing a wide variety of new and exciting applications,” said Angus Robertson, senior Director of Marketing at Spirent Communications. “Powering our industry-leading mobile and cloud solutions with Intel’s latest processor provides equipment makers and service providers with never-before-seen levels of flexibility for user and service emulation with high scale and accuracy.”

“As the testing needs of equipment makers and service providers continue to advance, solutions must provide a simple way to support their ever-changing and more sophisticated needs,” said Bill Rollender, Director of Marketing, Intel Communications Infrastructure Division. “By turning to test solutions supported by our latest processors, users enjoy flexibility, performance and accuracy ensuring next-generation networks live up to their promise and expectations.”

With complete portability with Spirent’s Virtual testing solutions, the new test hardware provides a seamless transition between virtual to physical testing. Its test software is the same regardless of the environment, helping to improve test accuracy and ease of use and enabling critical new services based on SDN and NFV infrastructure.

The evolved test hardware design and development builds on Spirent’s commitment to introducing solutions that are based on cutting-edge technology that continue to vastly improve test coverage, performance and efficiency. Spirent’s recently-announced test modules and chassis utilize Intel’s existing processor technology. The enhanced hardware design continues to build on the previous performance and scale capabilities.
