After a 2-Year Effort, Boston Firm Delivers Upgraded ARM-Based Pro Audio Device

BOSTON, Nov. 18, 2014 — (PRNewswire) —  Technomad LLC recently upgraded its flexible audio appliance, the Schedulon, with a new hardware and software foundation that allows for more advanced features and lower cost.

The original Schedulon was introduced in 2008 and was unique in offering users a simple web-based way to upload and schedule audio files for automatic playback - for example, in school bell, airport security, or background music applications.  Since the product's debut, the company added enhancements like to-the-second scheduling, much larger on-board file storage, net-based remote control, and more.

"We packed a lot of features and ease of use into the original Schedulon," reports Technomad Vice President Rodger von Kries, "but we eventually hit the limits of the processor family we were using."  The firm's 'road map' for the device included letting the user create and schedule playlists of songs "without using any special software," explains von Kries, "as well as high quality recording and lossless audio playback.  We knew this was impossible without rethinking the hardware."

With a move to an embedded ARM7 processor and a mixture of .NetFM and custom C++ code, the company was able to deliver on its plan, and this month shipped the latest iteration of the Schedulon at special reduced pricing.

Improvements include the aforementioned ability to create and schedule groups of audio files called Playlists – very useful for background music and event sound, the firm reports – much enhanced recording quality, and the ability to play a wider range of audio formats including MP3, WAV, and OGG Vorbis.  The latest Schedulon also features an enhanced Real Time Clock, which drifts by less than one minute per year – critical for applications where the device cannot be connected to the Internet to get time updates.

The Schedulon is sold through Technomad's network of 340 US dealers and 51 international resellers.

"We've kept what users love about the Schedulon," says von Kries, mentioning the one-rackspace size, general ease-of-use, and the quick access knob on the front of the unit. "However, we're able to implement some really advanced features now thanks to the upgraded processor and code base.  We're excited about the future of the product."
