AXIS Geospatial to Provide New GIS Base Map Layers for Prince George’s County Maryland

April 15, 2009 -- Easton, Maryland - The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission awarded AXIS Geospatial LLC headquartered in Easton, MD, with a competitive one year $746,000 contract to provide several new GIS base map layers for Prince George’s County Maryland. The Commission’s goal is to develop, update and maintain geographic information regularly for planning and decision-making. The last major geographic information updates for Prince George’s County were undertaken in 2005.

Using various airborne technologies, AXIS will fly fixed-wing aircraft equipped precision aerial digital cameras and laser range-finding sensors (LiDAR) to create new base map layers which will be used in several Prince George’s County GIS Applications. Upon capturing digital imagery using an Intergraph DMC camera and a Leica ALS52 LiDAR sensor, AXIS will produce digital data such as high resolution color and color infrared imagery (digital orthoimagery), a countywide map showing all physical improvements within the county (planimetric base maps), a countywide LiDAR digital terrain model with topography delineating elevations at a 2-foot interval as well as several other GIS Layers such as an Impervious Surface Model. The mapping information provided by AXIS will allow county personnel to clearly see map features as small as manholes and understand its true coordinate location to within ± 1.5 feet. Map accuracies are expected to range from .5 to 3 feet for well-defined map features.

“The precision aerial technology AXIS employs to accomplish such a project is extremely sophisticated and expensive – one digital sensor in one suitable airplane is approximately $3 Million in equipment costs; not to mention expenses associated with the operation and crew. We look forward to working with The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission and their team to provide reliable, accurate data to assist them in their decision making and other planning projects”, said Justin Lahman President/CEO of Axis Geospatial LLC. AXIS GeoSpatial has completed similar projects for 9 other Maryland Counties since 2003. Most notably, AXIS has recently completed a 2.8 Million, two year contract for the State of Maryland in providing similar high resolution color and color infrared digital orthoimagery for the entire State in both 2007 and 2008.
