The company’s fifth patent protects core technology
behind Geomagic Studio digital reconstruction software

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., February 15, 2006 – Geomagic has been awarded a U.S. patent (patent # US 6,996,505) for its unique method of automatically generating untrimmed NURBS surfaces from polygon models while detecting and preserving topology and highly curved features.

The patented process, used in Geomagic Studio digital reconstruction software, is largely responsible for the product’s renowned ease of use and speed in automatically transforming captured shape data from physical objects into accurate NURBS models for downstream CAD/CAM, engineering analysis, custom manufacturing, and other applications. It is the fifth U.S. patent Geomagic has received for its technologies, with four others pending.

Automatic NURBS surface generation while preserving topology and defining highly curved features has played a key role in several Geomagic success stories, including helping a leading Japanese automaker reduce surfacing time for complex objects such as engine and transmission housings by as much as 80 percent; enabling Fisher-Price to quickly create endless variations of classic toys; and capturing and preserving in digital form rare antiquities and landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty.
