General Motors Renews Sponsorship of MATHCOUNTS

2007-2008 School Year Marks GM's 22nd Year of Support for MATHCOUNTS

ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 19 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The MATHCOUNTS Foundation is proud to announce the General Motors Foundation renewal to our prestigious list of National Sponsors. The GM Foundation has been a supporter of the MATHCOUNTS program for 22 years with funding totaling $1,650,000.

A national math enrichment, coaching and competition program, MATHCOUNTS heightens student interest in mathematics by making math achievement as challenging, exciting and prestigious as a school sport. Each year, the MATHCOUNTS Foundation creates an entirely new MATHCOUNTS School Handbook and provides a complimentary copy to every middle school in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories and State Department and Department of Defense schools worldwide. Focused on problem solving, analytical thinking, reasoning and teamwork, these 300 math problems meet National Council of Teachers of Mathematics standards for grades 6-8. Thousands of teachers utilize these creative problems in the classroom or as extracurricular materials.

Beyond the challenge of learning new skills, the MATHCOUNTS competition series (school, local, state and national) provides students with an added incentive to focus on mathematics. More than 6,300 schools register students to participate in the MATHCOUNTS competition and vie for prizes, scholarships, bragging rights and the opportunity to advance to the Lockheed Martin MATHCOUNTS National Competition. Students of all abilities thoroughly enjoy the experience and develop the mathematical aptitude, self-confidence and teamwork skills to better prepare them for their future.

"General Motors has proudly sponsored MATHCOUNTS for over 20 years," said Lawrence D. Burns, GM Vice President, Research & Development and Strategic Planning, and previous MATHCOUNTS honorary chair. "This is an educational program that challenges the minds of our middle school students, sharpens their math skills, and encourages them to achieve. The students competing in this program will be our future technology and business leaders. They set a great example for their peers by their hard work, dedication, and enthusiasm for mathematics."
