Major Shipbuilder Expands ABAQUS Implementation

Initiative delivers significant cost savings and consolidates FEA software tools

PAWTUCKET, R.I., USA, March 25, 2003 - ABAQUS, Inc., the leading provider of advanced finite element analysis (FEA) software, announced today that Northrop Grumman Newport News, the sole designer and builder of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers in the United States and one of only two companies capable of designing and building nuclear-powered submarines for the U.S. Navy, has significantly expanded its adoption and commitment to ABAQUS advanced finite element software.

Northrop Grumman Newport News has traditionally used a combination of ABAQUS and other commercial software for finite element analysis. As a result of close collaboration, technical teams from ABAQUS and Northrop Grumman Newport News determined that ABAQUS usage could be extended to a wider range of applications than previously thought possible. The collaboration focused on the Navy's use of Dynamic Design Analysis Method (DDAM), as well as some newly developed features in ABAQUS, such as advanced and fully coupled structural/acoustic capabilities to perform underwater shock analysis (UNDEX). The expanded usage of ABAQUS also allowed Northrop Grumman Newport News to realize considerable cost savings via consolidation of their software tools.

"We've been long-time satisfied customers of ABAQUS, but mainly for nonlinear problems," commented Kevin Arden, Project Engineer, Shock Technology Group, at Northrop Grumman Newport News. "We saw an opportunity to expand our adoption, and, by sharing our process requirements with ABAQUS, we were able to map out a plan to tackle more traditional analysis needs."

"We're delighted with this opportunity to play a bigger role at Northrop Grumman Newport News," commented Ken Short, vice president of marketing at ABAQUS. "This decision clearly demonstrates that our commitment to understanding the needs of our customers is appreciated both from a technical and business perspective. Major users of FEA for mission-critical applications can depend on ABAQUS for our long-term commitment to technology and customer satisfaction."
