The CAD Society Announces 2003 CAD Society Industry Award for Leadership

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., April 23, 2003 — The CAD Society, a not-for-profit CAD industry association, today announced the winner of the 2003 CAD Society Industry Award for Leadership. The recipient of this year’s award is Thomas Butta, executive V.P. and chief marketing officer for PTC. The award will be presented at a ceremony on May 17 at COFES2003: The Congress on the Future of Engineering Software, being held in Scottsdale, Ariz.

The CAD Society Industry Award for Leadership is awarded for outstanding technical and business leadership in the CAD industry, and focus and dedication to the needs of CAD users.

Butta was picked to receive this year’s award for his involvement as the chief architect of PTC’s Product First Roadmap, a unique product development strategy that enables manufacturing companies to dramatically improve their use of the product development process to create sustainable value through revenue growth and improved profitability. It calls for manufacturers to place the product development process at the center of their enterprises in order to create superior products and tangible value at both the top and bottom line.

“Tom was the clear choice for this year’s Leadership Award,” said Joe Greco, president of the CAD Society. “The Product First Roadmap is an innovative tool that design companies can use to realize their full business potential. Through programs like this, companies can grow and increase returns, which strengthens the CAD industry as
a whole.”

Prior to PTC, Butta was chief marketing officer for CommerceQuest, a leading integration software company, and Red Hat, Inc., a pioneer in open source software and one of the most recognized technology brands in the world. At Red Hat, Butta helped drive one of the most successful IPOs in NASDAQ history, created customer acquisition programs that grew global revenue five-fold, and began the transition of Red Hat's business model from one focused on the individual user to one targeting the enterprise. Prior to that, he was chief executive officer at FGI, Inc., a marketing strategy, sciences and communications company. Known for his extensive experience in branding and positioning, Butta has been featured numerous times in top business publications and trade journals. He is a regular speaker at industry events, lectures at two business schools and is on the boards of several young companies.

The CAD Society Industry Awards recognize the contributions of individuals within the Computer-Aided-Design (CAD) and engineering software industry. CAD and related engineering software applications are used in the design of buildings, automobiles, consumer goods, and just about every manufactured product in the market today.

The CAD Society also presents awards in two other categories:
