Pitney Bowes Business Insight’s MapInfo® Crime Profiler(™) Puts Crime in Focus for Major Metropolitan Police Forces

HYANNIS, Mass. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — September 19, 2011 — Pitney Bowes Business Insight, a global leader in customer data, analytics and communication software and services, today announced that law enforcement in major cities, including the London Metropolitan Police Service, are using the MapInfo® Crime Profiler™ solution for crime and incident mapping and analysis.

MapInfo Crime Profiler enables police departments to visualize crime patterns, including series, type, time, locale or other characteristics, in order to help them deploy resources in a more effective manner. The solution also assists detectives in identifying and apprehending suspects; and plays a role in monitoring operations and formulating crime prevention strategies.

In addition to effective crime analysis, MapInfo Crime Profiler also reveals fraud patterns clustered around specific locations such as residences, non-existent business addresses, altered ATMs and others. MapInfo Crime Profiler is being used by the British Transport Police to help reduce cable theft across the British rail network, a top priority for the force and second only to the terrorist threat.

“We are using MapInfo Crime Profiler to map and analyze those hotspots where cable theft is most prevalent,” said, Charlotte Crabtree, Force Principal Analyst at the British Transport Police. “The mapping tools pull together a number of datasets to help us identify, for example, the nearest scrap dealers so that we can direct intelligence checks as soon as a crime occurs and dealers’ books can be immediately inspected by police officers to identify likely perpetrators.”

“The analysis of persistent crime problems has been used by many law enforcement agencies to help identify, target and prioritize suitable areas for crime prevention initiatives,” said Ian Broadbent, Principal Product Manager Global Public Safety Solutions at Pitney Bowes Business Insight. “With money tighter than ever for many police forces, sophisticated and user-friendly technology is imperative to help them deploy their resources to the fullest effect.”

MapInfo Crime Profiler features highly visual, interactive charting and graphing capabilities with sophisticated time-based analysis. Proximity analysis of crimes to known offenders or geographical risk factors helps law enforcement officers identify suspects rapidly. The software also makes it easier for crime analysts to identify crime patterns and determine how best to address them.

Interactive hotspot map creation allows analysts to instantly show how different settings change the representation of the data. Law enforcement officials can examine a variety of real-time “what if” scenarios by layering aerial photography, street maps, demographics, segmentation maps and more. The insight gained from this level of visual intelligence is powerful for criminal apprehension, creating effective crime prevention strategies and for resource deployment.
