Blom signs €2.3 million flood mapping contract in Romania

October 21, 2011 -- Blom Romania S.R.L, subsidiary of Blom, has signed a contract with the Romanian national water authority, to develop plans for the prevention, protection and flood mitigation effects in the Ialomita, Calmatui and Mostistea river basins in Romania. The total area of these basins measure some 13,776 sq km, or approximately 5% of the total surface of Romania. The expected value of the agreement is approximately €2.3 million and work will start in 2011.

Specific objectives of the project are to create detailed hydrological models and to produce flood hazard maps using hydraulic modeling. Flood hazard maps will help the authorities to establish priorities and make technical and financial decisions on the efficient management of flood risk across the region. Blom will use key competencies and existing technological resources, by providing consulting services for master planning of the river management, GIS integration in WIMS system and training.

Mariana Lacatus, spokesperson for Administratia Bazinala de Apa Buzău-Ialomiţa, says "We believe that the experience we’ve gained by developing a similar project for the Buzau River Basin represents a strong advantage for both Blom and us in the smooth running of this new project on the Ialomita, Calmatui and Mostistea river basins. Blom Romania’s capabilities gives us full confidence that the results of the project will fulfil our expectations, namely to provide us an effective tool in order to coordinate flood risk management inside these three water basins.”

The contract confirms Blom’s strategy to expand its activity in the growing economies in Central and Eastern Europe is giving results. This also confirms Blom’s strong position within flood modeling and management, a market segment which has experienced increased attention in recent years.

Ionut Savoiu, Managing Director for Blom Romania, said “The competition for winning this contract was extremely tight; fortunately the consortium led by Blom has met all beneficiaries’ expectations, both in terms of price quotation and technical capabilities”.
