Bechtel-Sponsored Teams to Compete in FIRST(R) Robotics Competition

SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- Mar 08, 2012 -- Eighteen high school teams sponsored by Bechtel are competing in this year's FIRST® Robotics Competition (FRC®), a high-tech sporting event featuring robots designed and built by students. Bechtel employees in the United States and Canada mentored students and provided technical guidance as the teams created robots that will compete in basketball games called "Rebound Rumble."

FRC is designed to build science, engineering, and technology skills, and inspire innovation, among young people. As a global engineering company, Bechtel continuously looks for ways to engage students in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), while at the same time, providing opportunities for employees to become involved in the communities where they work.

The FRC gives students a sense of the many facets of engineering. Under strict rules, limited resources, and time limits, the teams are challenged to raise funds, design a team "brand," hone teamwork skills, and build and program robots to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors.

"The value of the relationships between students, communities and companies is immeasurable in helping advance the mission of FIRST to expand science, technology, engineering, and math experiences for all students," said Dean Kamen, founder of FIRST. "Bechtel truly understands how crucial it is that we provide these students with experiences that both inspire innovation and cultivate a passion for science and technology."

Throughout March and April, the teams will participate in regional competitions in Baltimore, Md.; Houston, TX; Knoxville, Tenn.; Montreal, QC; Richmond, Va.; and Washington, D.C. to try to secure a spot at the world championship in late April. Bechtel is a sponsor of the six regional competitions.
