GGP Systems Celebrates 20 Years of GIS Innovation

April 19, 2012 -- UK-based GIS company GGP Systems is celebrating twenty years of trading. At the forefront of the development of modern GIS, GGP Systems was an early pioneer of desktop GIS and the National Land and Property Gazetteer, developing award winning geospatial software specifically designed for the local government market. From its inception in this market, GGP Systems has gone on to develop solutions for the Emergency Services - securing a national contract with the Scottish Police Services Authority (SPSA), Fire and Rescue Services, housing and environmental service organisations.

GGP Systems was established in 1992 following a management buyout from IT company Hoskyns. The first ever version of GGP GIS was developed by the current Managing Director and founder Tim Maxwell while working within the Greater London Council and was developed as a PC GIS. GGP also had an Accident Analysis module which was used initially to compile and analyse road traffic accident data. GGP GIS was in fact instrumental in achieving a 30 per cent reduction in road traffic accidents across London at the time. Not only did this early version of GGP GIS offer sophisticated and state of the art spatial analysis features it is considered by many to be the forerunner of GIS on a PC Platform. GGP GIS was also used by Transport for London to implement all the Red Route in London.

“The idea of GGP was to offer a real alternative to the expensive mainframe & Unix solutions that were common at the time,” commented Maxwell. “By offering better functionality at a fraction of the price we were able to support and promote the take up of PC based GIS in Councils across the UK helping them to save millions of pounds. This is a concept that we have built on and continue to apply to all our solutions.”

GGP Systems continued to innovate migrating its GIS from DOS to Windows and developing solutions specifically designed to address the changing needs of UK public sector organisations. The latest version of GGP GIS supports the EU INSPIRE Directive while previous versions have supported E-Government, T-Government and the more recent drive to ‘shared services’.

GGP Systems was also the first company to truly understand the importance of the National Land and Property Gazetteer and was the first company to accredited for BS7666 in 2000. GGP NGz was also one of the first gazetteer management suites to receive accreditation for address data transfer (DTF 7.3). Users of GGP NGz software consistently perform well at prestigious events, such as the National Gazetteer Exemplar Awards when five out six winners in the main categories in 2010 were GGP clients!

“GGP solutions are designed to offer real value for money – something our loyal customer base seems to recognise and appreciate,” continued Maxwell. “Over the past twenty years we have remained a privately owned, UK based, independent business that is financially stable and dedicated to a set of core values including an ethos of honesty, integrity and excellence in customer service.”
