Charlotte-Mecklenburg Field Operations Deploys Cityworks

Flexible, GIS-Centric Solution Poses Many Advantages for Widespread Field Use

Sandy, UT – More than 350 field operations staff managing billions of dollars in assets are getting the job done more efficiently and more effectively than ever before.  The Charlotte Mecklenburg Utilities Department recently expanded its Cityworks implementation to include Field Operations.  The organization expressed excitement when detailing the benefits the system provides.

A Cityworks user since 2006, Charlotte-Mecklenburg has long showcased myriad benefits from Cityworks and was confident about expanding the solution to its field operation’s team.  In January 2012, the organization rolled out the web-based Cityworks Server AMS for its widespread and extensive Utilities Field Operations Division.  The deployment includes an estimated 350 field employees utilizing Cityworks on 160 Panasonic Toughbooks and Dell XFRs to manage a few billion dollars worth of assets, including more than 8,000 miles of water distribution and sewer collection lines, 130,000 manholes, tens of thousands of valves and fittings, and more than 70 lift-stations.

Within the first week of live operation, the agency handled more than 4,700 service requests and 200 discrete work orders (both reactive and preventative), along with a few thousand parts and materials through Cityworks Storeroom.  A closer look revealed the Field Operations had responded to and closed nearly half of the service requests (2,200).

We are excited about this phase and are already looking ahead to the next steps,” said Shawn M. Coffman, Program Manager, Work and Asset Management Team. “This project alone will yield tremendous benefits to our Utility and to the city – a credit to our relationship with Azteca Systems, Inc.  The Cityworks (Azteca Systems) customer support team has been tremendously helpful and we could not be more pleased with their technical expertise, responsiveness, and thoroughness.”

Charlotte-Mecklenburg developed custom asset hierarchies in Cityworks to match its specific approach for water and wastewater treatment plant management, scheduled to go live this fall.  The organization also integrated Cityworks with its Ventyx Advantage Customer Information and Billing system, and to the North Carolina One Call utility locate system.  Both integrations feature bi-directional capabilities through Microsoft BizTalk.

“The opportunity to help Charlotte-Mecklenburg expand its Cityworks deployment to include the Field Operations Division is a testament to their confidence in Cityworks and the GIS-centric approach we pioneered years ago,” said Brian Haslam, President Azteca Systems, Inc.   “No other system compares to Cityworks GIS-centric approach nor shares the performance, capability, and flexibility it provides to such a broad array of agencies, from cities as expansive as Charlotte-Mecklenburg to small towns.  Whether there are hundreds of field users or a one-person public works department, Cityworks Empowers GISTM with the same great benefits.”
