Japanese engineers evaluate 5-axis machining and preview the latest developments in WorkNC V22

December 13, 2012 - Sescoi recently held a seminar and reception in Tokyo for its Japanese WorkNC CADCAM users, distributors and members of the trade press. Focusing on 5-axis machining and the advances in WorkNC V22, the pipeline version of its CADCAM software, the company welcomed around 60 delegates to the event.

Professor Tsutsumi, Graduate School of Engineering, Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, shared the results of many years of research into 5-axis machining. He covered topics such as developments in the accuracy of 5-axis machinery, applications where 5-axis machining makes it possible to cut problem parts and the characteristics of different 5-axis machining strategies.

Expanding on the 5-axis theme, the next session demonstrated the advantages of WorkNC’s Auto 5 module which takes 3-axis machining paths and automatically converts them into fully functional and collision free 5-axis toolpaths. To illustrate the advantages, WorkNC user Nissin Kogyo Co., Ltd, which specializes in brake technology, reported its experiences after it added 5-axis machining to its WorkNC CADCAM software in 2011.

This was followed by a session on the increase in productivity due to the use of 5-axis machining technology in Europe, the techniques used and the advantages realized from its implementation.

Delegates reported that the presentations on the current state-of-play in 5-axis machining technology provided valuable information and that the advances in 5-axis CAM software illustrated by WorkNC Engineers provided a compelling case for investment.

After an introduction to WorkNC EXPress-EDM, an automated electrode machining package, exclusively available in Asia, and WorkNC-CAD Hybrid Modeling, delegates were then able to get an exclusive preview of WorkNC V22.

WorkNC V22
is scheduled for release in 2013 and will include Flat Surface Roughing and Finishing strategies which find and machine flat surfaces irrespective of their orientation, shortening cycle times and improving surface quality. New Chamfering routines make it easy to cut chamfered edges and a new Wall Finishing strategy drills down vertical walls further reducing machining times. Other advantages include waterfall machining prevention, which stops the cutter falling off the edge of a part, ISO machining and extra vertical passes on Pencil Trace strategies to deal with areas of excess material. For 5-axis machining, the 12 strategies have been reduced to 6 simplifying and consolidating the powerful cutting paths available.

The informal reception which followed gave delegates the opportunity to meet WorkNC specialists face to face to feedback on future developments in the software.
