Fast, Cost-effective Solution Empowers GIS for Public Works and Utilities
February 27, 2013 -- Sandy, UT – Easy, fast, and affordable is how the City of Beaverton, Oregon, describes their experience implementing Cityworks with Azteca Systems Inc.’s Local Government Templates (LGT). An exciting new option for deploying Cityworks, LGT provided Beaverton a quick, easy, and inexpensive way to deploy the proven and genuine GIS-centric management solution in several divisions. As a result, the city plans to expand its Cityworks LGT usage into other areas much sooner than they expected.
“This methodology helped us realize an almost instant return on our investment,” stated Juston Manville, GIS Manager at the City of Beaverton. “The Local Government Data Model (Esri) and Local Government Templates made this possible. So many organizations spend years implementing and paying maintenance on their software before they actually use the product they purchased. The Local Government Templates allowed us to use Cityworks in a production environment almost instantly.”
With the desire to implement a GIS-centric solution that could be up and running quickly, the city selected Cityworks. After procuring the software in September 2012, they chose to configure Cityworks Local Government Templates using internal resources and following the Simple Iterative Partitions model. On-site training launched the project in October. Soon after, they began migrating descriptive asset data from their previous work management system into Esri’s Local Government Information Model.
Once the asset inventory was in the Local Government Information Model, the city followed with configuring the Cityworks database. Using the Local Government Templates, which are designed specifically to align with Esri’s Local Government Information Model, they were able to post the initial configuration for review and refinement in just three weeks.
“With the (Cityworks) Local Government Templates, we mainly just tweaked the models versus having to come up with templates from scratch,” Manville continued. “Users got to see their suggestions implemented very quickly. This gave them a sense of ownership that is often hard to achieve when implementing new software to a group that has a tried and true process.”
The city currently manages asset maintenance for their traffic, water, sewer, and stormwater divisions, with plans to tackle the streets division very soon. Future phases involve integrating with Granite XP for CCTV inspections and MicroPaver for pavement inspections.
“The Cityworks Local Government Templates represent a significant milestone for our customers and Azteca Systems Inc.,” stated Brian Haslam, President and CEO, Azteca Systems Inc. “Cityworks LGT provides both new and existing clients an easy, very fast, and cost-effective means to implement Cityworks throughout their organization. Enhancing a solutions’ capability with more features or improved functionality is really only half of the answer. The other half is listening closely to our customers and leveraging the latest technologies. With industry-standard work activities and inspections, organizations can implement and get to work almost immediately. Cityworks Local Government Templates are the result of years of research and experience with public works and utilities and how they get things done. We’re very excited to see customers like the City of Beaverton realize the benefits and return on their investment, quickly and easily.”
