Southern LINC Forms Strategic Alliance With Data Burst to Provide Vehicle Location Service

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 10, 2001--Southern LINC® today announced a strategic partnership with Data Burst Technologies Inc., a leading provider of wireless Internet solutions, to offer businesses economical vehicle location service (VLS).

Customers will benefit from a real-time tracking solution with wireless service from Southern LINC, integrated with iTRAK(TM), a GPS-based device from Data Burst that is placed in the vehicle. Southern LINC offers integrated handsets equipped with Instant LINC(SM) two-way radio, phone service, paging and wireless data applications.

"We are tracking 48 vehicles using Southern LINC and Data Burst. The solution helps us give our customers accurate delivery times," says Randy Kuhn, dispatcher for North Georgia Brick, a brick distribution company. "We can also find people who are broken down or lost to provide added security for our drivers and create reports of how long it takes our brick yards to load the trucks."

Data Burst's iTRAK device resides in the vehicle and transmits information via Southern LINC's packet data network. Customers are able to track their fleet of vehicles mile-by-mile on custom maps hosted on Data Burst's NavView Web site. When a subscriber logs onto www.navview.com, the site provides vehicle location information, mapping, remote configuration and reports for every vehicle with an iTRAK device. The system stores that information for 60 days and can be downloaded by the customer at any time. Map views are updated every five minutes so the dispatcher sees the most current location.

Additional benefits of Southern LINC's VLS service include:

  • Improved fleet efficiency and on-route compliance,
  • Increased security for drivers and cargo,
  • More ability for dispatchers to direct vehicles and drivers efficiently,
  • Better documentation of deliveries, and
  • Improved possibility of recovering stolen vehicles.

To implement this solution, customers will need a Data Burst iTRAK wireless Internet location device, NavView access and wireless service from Southern LINC. The iTRAK has a GPS receiver and integrates with a Southern LINC wireless handset to transmit vehicle location information to the NavView Web site. The iTRAK can easily be moved from vehicle to vehicle, or be configured for permanent installation. The same Southern LINC handset connected to iTRAK can also be used for two-way radio, phone and wireless data communication.
