Rochdale Highways Inspectors Map Highway Defects with Mobile MAYRISE system

March 13, 2013 -- Highways Inspectors in Rochdale, UK, are achieving significant gains in efficiency following the upgrade of mobile working and mapping software operating on the latest handheld computers. Armed with Trimble devices running the latest MAYRISE Highways Mobile software the team are now able to spend more time in the field undertaking routine safety inspections and investigating reports from the public on defects such as potholes.

The efficiency gains are attributed to recent improvements in mobile working that have resulted in less time travelling between inspection sites and the office, and a reduced administrative burden.

“Our new mobile devices, powered by MAYRISE, are easier to use,” commented Bob Chadwick, Senior Engineer at Rochdale Borough Council. “Inspectors are now ready to go at the start of each shift; they don’t need to come into the office to pick up their schedule and they don’t need to return to the office at the end of the day to drop off their reports,”

In the field MAYRISE MapNow provides access to integrated Ordnance Survey mapping and the Council’s street gazetteer facilitating the location and identification of reported faults or routine safety inspection routes.

“The integrated mapping and street gazetteer make it easy to find faults that may have been highlighted by a previous inspection, or reported by members of the public, and the drop down menus make the whole reporting process much quicker and less subjective. The Trimble devices have larger screens than our previous solution, predictive text and are easier to hold and use; factors that have been welcomed by the Inspectors.”

Using MAYRISE Highways Mobile software running on Trimble Juno handheld devices each member of Highways inspection team receives their daily schedule prior to the start of their shift. A series of drop down menus ensures inspection results are recorded and reported in accordance with procedure and the live linked devices are then used to upload reports to the centralised MAYRISE Highways system.

“In addition to the highways software MAYRISE Street Works Mobile will also be added to the devices in the forthcoming months to improve productivity on Roads and Street Works Act (RASWA) side of things,” concluded Chadwick.
