Nordic Semiconductor demonstrates diverse range of 2.4GHz proprietary, ANT+ and Bluetooth low energy wireless applications at DESIGN West

Nordic highlights reference designs, sample applications, RF modules, and products using its ANT+ and Bluetooth Smart wireless connectivity solutions to inspire design engineers at leading Silicon Valley technical conference

San Jose, CA, April 22, 2013 -- Ultra low power (ULP) RF specialist Nordic Semiconductor ASA (OSE:NOD) today announces demonstrations of ULP 2.4GHz wireless connectivity solutions––in smart home, security, sports & fitness, and toy sectors––that the company is showing on its booth (724) at DESIGN West 2013.

Nordic’s own reference designs and sample applications provide designers with an ideal starting point and ready-built design framework to accelerate development of nRF24L Series 2.4GHz proprietary, ANT+™, and Bluetooth® Smart applications and accessories. In addition, partner companies’ demonstrations include Nordic proprietary, ANT+, and Bluetooth Smart-powered applications that will enable designers to take advantage of a huge new market for “appcessories” – an accessory paired with an “app”.

The latest smartphones from major manufacturers incorporate chips and software supporting ANT+ or Bluetooth v4.0 (which includes Bluetooth low energy as a hallmark element) that can communicate with ANT+ peripherals or Bluetooth Smart devices. This functionality promises many new opportunities for compact wirelessly-connected products, powered by coin cell batteries, such as handset accessories, sports & fitness monitors, and toys. (See “About ANT/ANT+” and “About Bluetooth low energy wireless technology, Bluetooth Smart, and Bluetooth Smart ready”below.)

In addition, Nordic will be demonstrating RF modules developed by leading Japanese ODMs Hosiden Corporation and Fujitsu Component. The modules are based on Nordic’s nRF51822 Bluetooth low energy and 2.4GHz proprietary System-on-Chip (SoC) (See “About nRF51822” below) and are supplied complete with Nordic’s verified and qualified Bluetooth low energy stack. The nRF51822’s clean boundary between application code and protocol stack simplifies development by removing the need to struggle with integration of application code as part of a vendor-imposed application development framework.

Other demonstrations include:

• Nordic’s nRFready Desktop 2 and nRFready Smart Remote 2. The nRFready Desktop 2 is the world's first combined Bluetooth low energy and proprietary 2.4GHz wireless mouse and keyboard ‘combo’ reference design and the nRFready Smart Remote 2 is a complete hardware and software remote control reference design featuring a multi-touch touchpad, 6-axis motion sensing, and full QWERTY keyboard. The reference designs are based on the multiple-award winning nRF51822 SoC;

• Heart rate monitors from leading ODMs such as Wahoo and National Electronics & Watch Company (NEWCO) based on Nordic’s nRF51822 SoC and nRF51422 ANT SoC (see “About nRF51422” below);

• Toys, including a proximity application demonstrating the concept of nRF24LE1-equipped dogs that bark when they move close to each other, and an nRF51822-equipped helicopter and race car that can be remotely controlled from an Apple iPhone®.

The reference designs, applications, RF modules, and partner products are based on Nordic's marketleading nRF24L Series chips (see “About nRF24LE1” and “About nRF24LU1” below), ANT devices, and nRF51 Series multiprotocol SoCs. The nRF51 series SoC architecture is designed specifically to minimize average current consumption and enable single-chip implementations of a wide range of wireless applications (see “About nRF51 Series” below).

“DESIGN West is where design engineers and product developers gather and learn, gain inspiration, and get practical information and hands-on training they can put to immediate use,” says J. Darren O’Donnell, Nordic Semiconductor’s Director of Sales & Marketing - Americas. “That makes it the perfect venue for Nordic to demonstrate––with the help of partner companies––a diverse range of reference designs and applications based on the company’s ultra low power 2.4GHz wireless connectivity solutions. We’re showing just a few examples of what’s possible with these technologies, but, in keeping with the event’s philosophy, we hope these ideas inspire attendees to come up with many new uses for wireless connectivity.”
