Roland Demonstrates the Advanced Capabilities of its MDX 3D Milling Machines at SIGGRAPH 2013

Irvine, Calif. , August 5 , 201 3 – Roland DGA Corp. featured its line of MDX benchtop milling machines at the recent SIGGRAPH 2013 conference, introducing all the benefits of the company’s advanced subtractive rapid prototyping (SRP) technology to show attendees.

As the world's premier conference on computer graphics and interactive techniques, SIGGRAPH drew more than 17,000 artists, research scientists, gaming experts and developers, filmmakers, students and academics from 77 countries to the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, Calif.

Roland MDX milling machines, which incorporate SRP technology, were featured in the SIGGRAPH “Studio,” a collaborative workspace where attendees had the opportunity to gain hands-on technical training while producing their own projects. Roland DGA Product Manager Rachel Hammer represented the company at the show, demonstrating the precision, flexibility and efficiency of SRP technology for rapid prototyping and short-run manufacturing applications.

“At SIGGRAPH, we had an opportunity to introduce SRP technology to many educators, engineers and computer graphics professionals already familiar with 3D printing,” she said.  “With a price tag that’s less than half the cost of most additive systems, the MDX is both a great investment for these end users and a powerful upgrade to their design and production environments.”

Starting with a solid object and removing unwanted material, Roland’s MDX mills go beyond the capabilities of 3D printing by producing prototypes with greater precision and much smoother surface finishes.  MDX prototypes are ideally suited for complex snap-fits, and provide the functionality required for proof of concept and manufacturability testing.

Support for nonproprietary materials, including ABS, Delrin, nylon, aluminum, brass and copper, allows users to prototype in end materials for a true simulation of the finished product or part. MDX prototypes are so realistic they can be used for structural, thermal, and electrical testing, meeting a host of FDA and other government requirements.  Bundled CAM software makes MDX mills easy to operate and provides a complete solution.
