Cambashi research shows Nordic region investing in engineering software.

The latest research from Cambashi shows that, in 2012, growth in technical application software spending in the Nordic countries grew to 466 Million Euros.  Measured in Euros, this is the third consecutive year of double digit growth.

Worldwide technical applications investment showed healthy growth worldwide in 2012 and the Europe, Middle East and Africa region overall grew 8% to 5.0 Billion Euros.

Cambashi's research covers manufacturing (CAD/CAM/CAE and PLM), architecture, engineering and construction (AEC), and geospatial (GIS) applications.

Medium term outlook promising

In the Nordic countries, Cambashi forecasts that the recent steady growth is likely to slow in 2013 and 2014 but remain positive; in 2015 the research firm expects a faster growth rate.

Simon Hailstone, Head of Research at Cambashi, comments: "The Nordic market for technical software has proved resilient compared with Southern Europe.  There are a good number of world-class Nordic companies and Norway's Energy sector all with considerable investment capacity and skilled employees that can take advantage of innovation in technical software."

Norway leads growth

Norway is the second largest Nordic market and accounts for nearly a quarter of the Nordic market's spending on technical software.

Cambashi's research looks into the detail of different industry sectors in different Nordic countries. In Norway, Oil and Gas exploitation drives investment.  Aveva has the largest share of Oil and Gas investment in design software tools with customers like Lundin, Statoil using PDMS, and STX OSV who use their marine software.

Sweden is largest market

Sweden is the largest Nordic market with 36% of technical applications expenditure.  In Sweden,
Autodesk and Dassault Systèmes have strong market shares.  Autodesk is chosen by many companies in Sweden's thriving construction industry. Dassault Systèmes is widely used in Sweden's many world-class exporters such as Husqvarna and Saab Aerospace who continue to invest in new product development.

Other Nordic countries

In Finland, the downturn in its key electronics and paper processing sectors and Nokia's misstep in the mobile handset market restrict the available resources for investment. Even so, many manufacturing companies continue to make reasonable profits and investment in product development and the tools to make that process more effective continue as a priority for management.  Finland is home to Tekla, an important foundation stone in the Trimble Buildings Group, created last year.

In Denmark, despite a flat economy the technical applications market continues to grow at a modest rate.  The important wind turbine sector is currently recovering from difficult economic conditions but we anticipate that will become a driver for future demand for technical applications software.
