National Institute of Building Sciences Conference to Look at the Big Picture

Plenary Symposium, Conference Theme to Focus on
Advancing Life-Cycle Performance

Building Innovation 2014: The National Institute of Building Sciences Conference and Expo will focus on Advancing Life-Cycle Performance throughout the weeklong event, January 6-10, 2014, in Washington, D.C. During the Plenary Symposium, presented by the Institute’s Coordinating Council, attendees will get an overview of the Conference theme as presenters discuss the collaboration of building industry professionals in achieving life-cycle performance.

A team of building professionals must integrate and optimize numerous attributes and disciplines in order to design, construct, operate and maintain a high-performance building. Just as team members must consider the big picture to achieve life-cycle performance, the Plenary Symposium, to be held Wednesday, January 8 during Building Innovation 2014, will explore the relationships across building systems, stakeholders and technologies and examine how a holistic approach leads to the achievement of life-cycle performance goals.

Given the complexity of buildings; the number of stakeholders involved in the design, construction, and operations and maintenance of buildings; and the role buildings play in our daily lives, it is no wonder that they have significant demands placed on them by owners, occupants, governments and society at large. For buildings to be able to meet these demands throughout their full life-cycle requires a concerted effort by all disciplines to engage in the development of holistic solutions.

Fundamental to the establishment of holistic solutions is the understanding of how individual attributes and systems contribute to the overall performance of buildings. The Plenary Symposium, free and open to all members of the building industry, will provide a brief introduction to current priorities, how the building industry is addressing those priorities and ways to integrate solutions to produce high-performance buildings.

Those who attend Building Innovation 2014 will also have a chance to gain in-depth knowledge on the different aspects of life-cycle performance through a number of other symposia presented during the week. In addition to the Plenary Symposium, the buildingSMART alliance™, the Multihazard Mitigation Council, the Sustainable Buildings Industry Council, the Building Enclosure Technology & Environment Council, the Facility Maintenance & Operations Committee and the Low Vision Design Committee will cover specific topics on the Conference theme. Other events during the Conference include FEDCon®The Annual Market Outlook on Federal Construction, and symposia on commissioning and resilience. The Beyond Green™ Awards and a celebration of the Institute’s 40th Anniversary are also on the Conference schedule.

Registration for Building Innovation 2014 opens on September 1. For more information, visit the Conference website.
