Mapping Technology The Silver Bullet To ‘Future-Proof’ Singapore

October 28, 2013 -- The role cutting-edge mapping technology will hold in ‘future-proofing’ Singapore will be unveiled by some of the Asia Pacific’s most influential organisations next month, at the region’s largest spatial technology event.

The Singapore Land Authority (SLA) and the Land Transport Authority of Singapore (LTA) are just two of the organisations presenting at next month’s Esri Asia Pacific User Conference (APUC) – which will bring together hundreds of the region’s leading IT professionals.

Chief Executive of SLA, Mr Vincent Hoong, will deliver a keynote address on how geospatial technology and information analytics can empower governments with insights that drive productivity growth and policy formulation.

Mr Leslie Wong, Managing Director of Esri Singapore – the technology company supporting these ‘future-proofing’ efforts – said Singaporean agencies have set a global benchmark with their innovative approach to planning and development.

“Singapore’s rich culture coupled with its beautiful architecture makes it one of the most desirable countries in the world – but given its small land size, planners are going to be constantly tested by complex urban challenges,” Mr Wong said.

“To address these challenges, an increasing number of organisations are using GIS technology to optimise their approach to land and resources management.

“By mapping and analysing data related to land use, environment, population density and even traffic congestion, planners can clearly identify where opportunities and challenges exist – and ensure the best use of State land, buildings and infrastructure.

“We are also starting to see 3D GIS technology used to create virtual cities – so planners can see what Singapore will look like in the future, so they can better plan and assess the impact and outcomes of land management decisions.”

The LTA will also be taking to the stage at APUC to reveal how they are using GIS technology and data sensors to better understand Singaporean commuter behaviour across different modes of transport.

The innovative approach has ensured LTA can undertake evidence-based planning, which is resulting in: improved road and construction safety; higher levels of workforce productivity; and proactive maintenance of Singapore’s transport network.

Hosted by Esri Singapore, APUC will bring together many global technology leaders from across the Asia Pacific and United States, including Jack Dangermond, the Founder and President of Esri.

The event runs from November 12 – 14 at the Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre.
