Esri technology manages data from numerous projects and sites worldwide, allowing staff to access up-to-date information needed for responsible mineral exploration
VANCOUVER, Esri Canada User Conference – November 14, 2013 – Esri Canada is pleased to announce that it has presented Teck Resources Limited (“Teck”) with an Award of Excellence. Teck is Canada’s largest diversified mining company focused on steelmaking coal, copper, zinc and energy, and owns or has interests in 13 mines and conducts exploration activities in numerous countries around the world. Each of Teck’s sites collects and maintains a significant amount of spatial data, which it must manage and share across an organization with geographically dispersed locations. To achieve this, Teck deployed Esri’s enterprise geographic information system (GIS) technology across its exploration sites and several operations and established an efficient data-sharing platform to support responsible mineral exploration and development.
“Teck has unlocked the power of GIS in their organization,” noted Alex Miller, president, Esri Canada. “They clearly understand the value of integrating the technology with their existing data and business systems to create a more collaborative work environment. As a result, they’ve achieved significant efficiencies in many aspects of their operations.”
Staff across offices and in the more remote field sites can access current, accurate information relevant to their work through secure files shares, geodatabase connections, and most recently, Web-based portals using their desktops, tablets and even smartphones. GIS has streamlined the flow of spatial data across the organization, as well as the development of applications in support of sustainable operations.
The company uses Esri’s ArcGIS for Server technology to consolidate data from its various projects and sites, and provide central access to it through various applications and Web-based data discovery portals. Many geoscientists use ArcGIS for Mobile to collect data in the field, which is synchronized to a central server then made available across the organization through various applications. GIS supports Teck’s entire mining cycle, from identifying target sites for drilling, mine planning and development, and through to decommissioning and reclamation. It provides advanced tools and capabilities for 2D and 3D visualization, prospectivity analysis, land management, asset management, financial and environmental reporting.
The Web portals have expanded the use of GIS at Teck to non-geoscience staff across departments including health and safety, risk management, engineering, community relations and accounting. The portals allow them to find and visualize data quickly and efficiently, extract information and print maps. Teck has also demonstrated the ability to spatially enable documents using Web portals and Esri Maps for SharePoint. This allows staff to easily retrieve documents related to specific features on the Web map, as well as create, display, and share information on interactive maps.
