CAM Market Concentration (by Cambashi)

November 19, 2013 - Cambashi recently released a summary analysis of the world-wide market for Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software tools. Key points were that this year the CAM market is expected to grow to USD 1.3 billion, with the market returning to its longer term trend with an expected 6% growth over 2012. This follows several post-financial crisis years of double digit catch-up growth.

Product Lifecycle Management suppliers Dassault Systèmes, PTC, and Siemens PLM account for just over a third of the market. Autodesk recently acquired technology from Danish HMSWorks and its tool, integrated with Inventor, is now in Beta test. The remaining two thirds of the fragmented CAM market is supplied by some 200 specialist CAM tool providers - the leading specialist, Vero Software, has a market share of only 8%.

However, several of those providers are concentrating the market through acquisition. An example is the acquisition by Delcam, which itself has one of the fastest rates of organic growth, of a minority stake in Fabbify, a German software developer specializing in additive machining. Our assessment was that developments in shop floor automation are likely to create new opportunities and we expect further technology acquisitions.

Enter the largest CAM company acquisition for a long time, that of Delcam by Autodesk. This is a bold move and potential industry milestone; the development of solutions that combine Autodesk's design technologies and Delcam's manufacturing capabilities will be worth watching.
