Get a Glimpse into the 7th Dimension: Building Innovation 2014 Keynote to Address Life-Cycle Performance in 7D

Each day of Building Innovation 2014: the National Institute of Building Sciences Conference and Expo will include a Keynote Luncheon that highlights a different perspective from the building industry. On Thursday, January 9, the topic will be “Life-Cycle Analysis – A 7D Future,” presented by Bob Prieto.

Find out how complex replaces simple, dynamic replaces static, uncertainty replaces certainty in Prieto’s presentation about the seventh dimension (7D) of building information. Prieto, a senior vice president at Fluor, one of the largest, publicly traded engineering and construction companies in the world, consults with owners of large engineering and construction programs and focuses on the development of strategies encompassing a capital asset’s complete life cycle.

Prieto will explain how the capital asset industry is being driven to new performance regimes by growing complexities, a focus on sustainability, longer asset lifetimes, uncertain futures and emerging resiliency requirements. Optimization is multi-dimensional and more holistic in this emerging future state and, importantly, it must occur even earlier in the asset development process. Today’s three, four and five dimensional building information modeling (BIM) systems provide a glimmer of hope, but the future requires even more—a 7D framework that addresses these emerging needs and more.

The 7D Future, which Prieto will describe in his presentation, is intended to challenge our industry, its practitioners and its tool makers to think deeper and more boldly about what the industry needs and what is possible.

Prieto is author of four books, including most recently, Application of Life Cycle Analysis in the Capital Assets Industry, published by the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA), as well as over 475 other papers and presentations. He is an inventor on 15 pending patents covering a wide range of subjects in the industry.
