ORTHOSHOP Geomatics Ltd. Expands Mapping Capabilities with Purchase of Leica ALS70-CM Aerial Laser Scanner and Leica RCD30 Digital Camera

The addition of a second Leica ALS70-CM and a third Leica RCD30 enhances ORTHOSHOP’S ability to capture highly accurate datasets that combine LiDAR and aerial imagery.

NORCROSS, GA, FEB. 13, 2014 – Leica Geosystems Inc. today announced that Calgary, Canada-based ORTHOSHOP Geomatics Ltd. has purchased a second Leica ALS70-CM airborne laser scanner and a third 80-megapixel Leica RCD30 RGBN digital camera.

ORTHOSHOP is a geomatics engineering firm that recognizes the value of leading edge technology in providing custom solutions. “We specialize in providing geomatics engineering solutions to discriminating clients with demanding requirements,” said George Constantinescu, ORTHOSHOP’s CEO. “We started our company with Leica’s groundbreaking OR1 orthophoto processing equipment at its core,” he explained, “and in the 34 years since we have been loyal purchasers of Leica Geosystems’ products, from analytical stereo plotters and analog cameras to photogrammetric scanners and software systems.”

The firm embraced digital processing early on in its development and two years ago added digital data acquisition capabilities with the purchase of its first Leica ALS70-CM laser scanner and two Leica RCD30 cameras. The Leica ALS70/RCD30 integrated sensor configuration enables the acquisition of comprehensive datasets in which the LiDAR and photographic data are co-registered. This characteristic provides for very detailed and accurate information extraction and complex problem solving. Additionally, the Leica ALS70 and Leica RCD30 sensors permit flying in less than ideal conditions and collecting large volumes of data quickly and accurately, which Constantinescu said is a distinct advantage. “Leica’s focus on innovation and product improvement is critically important to us,” he said. “Since we use the sensors in demanding real world conditions, we are able to provide feedback to support Leica’s continuing product development. We believe that the mutual respect and free communication that we enjoy between our organizations is the cornerstone of our long-term relationship.”

Constantinescu describes ORTHOSHOP as an “atypical” engineering company, meaning it goes beyond the design and planning phase and fully implements projects to completion. “Our capabilities include execution of our engineering solutions in-house,” he said. “This includes project planning, remote sensing, data processing, interpretation and integration of solutions into customers’ GIS. Adding another ALS70 and RCD30 at this time will allow us to satisfy the increasing market demand for our engineering solutions, and to better respond to urgent data requests from our customers.”

“ORTHOSHOP is a valued strategic partner for Leica,” said Jean Gardiner, General Manager of Leica Geospatial Solutions. “With these latest additions to their digital sensor inventory, ORTHOSHOP furthers its ability to serve clients at the highest level of reliability and quality.”
