Southeast Fiber Arts Alliance & Lamar Dodd School of Art Shine Spotlight on Student Fiber Artists

ATLANTA, GA--(Marketwired - May 22, 2014) - The Southeast Fiber Arts Alliance (SEFAA) in conjunction with the Lamar Dodd School of Art will host its biennial juried student exhibition Spotlight on Student Fiber Trends 2014 from June 5-29 at the Lamar Dodd School of Art on the UGA campus in Athens, GA.

The month long event will feature 48 pieces exhibiting trends and creative works in fiber art by 34 graduate and undergraduate students from throughout the Southeast. The works consists of yarn, fabric and a myriad of other materials manipulated using textile techniques.

"Our goal for this year's exhibition is to recognize and support the next generation of fiber artists while showcasing their work to a wide and appreciative audience," said Suzi Gough, President of Southeast Fiber Arts Alliance. "You will see innovation, creativity, unusual materials, new trends and new voices."

In addition to showcasing student fiber trends, this year's exhibition will feature a concurrent installation, SKYFALL, by Glen Kaufman, textile designer and Professor of Art Emeritus, at Lamar Dodd School of Art.

"I have long been committed to collaborative installations with dance and music both in the US and in Japan," said Kaufman. "SKYFALL involves the visual (Kimono fabric in space), plus movement (dance and performance) and music. These elements will be integrated in the performances at the opening and the closing of the exhibition."

All entries were juried into the exhibition by Glen Kaufman, and international artist/composer Ray Pierotti will select the award winners.

"It is clear that the fiber arts are alive and thriving among the next generation of student artists," says Ray Pierotti. "In the past if you mentioned fiber you would not be amiss if you thought weaving, maybe spinning and knitting. The entrants in the 2014 Spotlight on Student Fiber Trends competition have enlarged the discipline to encompass a much broader range of artistic techniques involving some structural form of natural and or synthetic fiber that is manipulated in ways that expand the meaning."

Gough, is excited to showcase this year's artists saying, "Spotlight on Student Fiber Trends 2014 is an inspirational exhibition and one that will leave you convinced of the vitality and validity of fiber arts in today's world."
