51st Design Automation Conference in San Francisco: 13% Increase in Attendance

New initiatives attracted more designers

LOUISVILLE, Colo. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — June 9, 2014 — The 51st Design Automation Conference (DAC), the premier conference devoted to design and design automation of electronic systems, was held in San Francisco, CA from June 1 to June 5, 2014. This year’s Executive Committee restructured the conference around themes adding three new tracks to the conference schedule: IP Design, Security, and Automotive Systems and Software. These new tracks expanded the existing Designer Track, Embedded Systems and traditional EDA tracks. Of the 6,701 people attending DAC 2014, 762 registered exclusively for the IP and Designer Tracks.

“We are thrilled to see an increase in designers attending the conference,” said Soha Hassoun, general Chair for the 51st DAC. “Last year in Austin, we had 1,589 attendees on full conference passes compared to 1,631 full conference passes for this year. Separate from full conference passes, this year we offered the Designer/IP pass which attracted over 750 additional designers to the new initiatives featured at the conference.”

Preliminary attendance figures for the 51st DAC break down as follows:

  • Full conference passes – 2,393
  • Exhibits-only passes – 1,650
  • Exhibitors’ booth staff – 2,658

The Executive Committee was pleased to see an increase in registration over the 50th DAC in 2014, as reflected in total registration numbers, an increase of 13%, and a higher attendance at the new technical sessions and keynotes. The opening keynote on Monday totaled 1,000 in attendance. The combined keynote attendance for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday was 3,534 up 2% from 2013.

195 companies exhibited on the conference floor in 2014, with six in the automotive village, 30 in designer IP and 17 exhibiting at DAC for the first time. Networking opportunities abounded, with receptions every night from Sunday through Wednesday, as well as on the floor, in poster sessions, in technical sessions and panels, and even in tutorials. “This was our first year at DAC, and, we were naturally worried about the expense of exhibiting,” said Harish Poojary, head of US operations and vice president of worldwide sales and business development at verification IP company SmartDV. “These fears proved totally unfounded. Within a few hours of the exhibit floor opening on Monday, we had covered our investment. The quality and quantity of the leads that stopped by the booth in succeeding days exceeded our expectations, as well.”

About DAC

The Design Automation Conference (DAC) is recognized as the premier event for the design of electronic circuits and systems, and for electronic design automation (EDA) and silicon solutions. A diverse worldwide community representing more than 1,000 organizations attends each year, represented by system designers and architects, logic and circuit designers, validation engineers, CAD managers, senior managers and executives to researchers and academicians from leading universities. Close to 60 technical sessions selected by a committee of electronic design experts offer information on recent developments and trends, management practices and new products, methodologies and technologies. A highlight of DAC is its exhibition and suite area with approximately 190 of the leading and emerging EDA, silicon, intellectual property (IP) and design services providers. The conference is sponsored by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the Electronic Design Automation Consortium (EDA Consortium), and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and is supported by ACM's Special Interest Group on Design Automation.
