Zilog Announces Z8F2480 Power Monitor with eZ80F91 Webserver Reference Design

A Reference Design for Energy Efficiency with Digital MCU Technology

MILPITAS, Calif. & LEIDEN, Netherlands — (BUSINESS WIRE) — August 12, 2014 — Zilog, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of IXYS Corporation (NASDAQ: IXYS) and a pioneer supplier of microcontrollers (MCUs) providing solutions for the industrial, telecommunication, automotive and consumer markets, introduces a Z8F2480-based AC power monitor with an eZ80F91 Webserver, expanding its portfolio of reference designs and fast time-to-market solutions. This new reference design targets remote-operated AC motors and commercial or architectural lighting control applications. It can be used as a basis for developing systems that control different power installations.

Designed with an optically-isolated Z8F2480 MCU, the power monitor can measure AC input voltage, AC load current, voltage/current phase shift and the power factor of a load. With the integrated eZ80F91 Webserver Module, these measured data can be communicated via a standard Ethernet interface and webserver. The MCU and the Webserver Module are connected for easy mounting. The power board provides current to a power load and provides optically-isolated I2C signals to the Module. The load is powered via a single-phase AC line with voltage in the range of 90 V to 240 V RMS at 50 Hz or 60 Hz.

This reference design features the following elements:

  • 90–240 V AC RMS input voltage range
  • Load current up to 3 amps
  • Less than 5 mA average current consumed from an AC line in either monitoring or standby modes
  • 3750 V isolation voltage between the AC line and the eZ80F91 MCU

Some example applications that can be developed include:

  • Remote-operated commercial or architectural lighting monitors
  • Remote-operated AC motors or other devices
  • Remote UPS monitoring
  • Remote power usage monitoring
  • Green Energy power generation monitoring
  • HVAC power usage monitoring

“We continue to expand a very current array of new turn-key reference designs to assist and accelerate design time. We are also now creating customer reference designs with our strategic customers in building integrated system level solutions promoting our products as well as our customers’ products for a strong system level design,” remarked Steve Darrough, Zilog’s VP of Marketing.

Zilog’s Z8F2480 Power Monitor with eZ80F91 Webserver is now available for customers that place orders through the Zilog Store. For more information, visit www.zilog.com.
