Epson Announces Collaboration with Bubl to Develop 360-Degree Video and Photo App for Smart Glasses

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — (BUSINESS WIRE) — August 12, 2014SIGGRAPH 2014, Booth 523 – Epson America today announced that Bubl has joined its Moverio Developer Program to offer seamless, 360-degree remote viewing experiences on the Moverio BT-200 smart glasses from its innovative, fully spherical camera, Bublcam.

With a dedicated Bublcam app, Moverio BT-200 smart glass users will be able to immerse themselves in panoramic digital imagery sent wirelessly from the camera anywhere in the world. The app will enable the Bublcam to serve as the user’s eyes, offering a hands-free, 360-degree viewing spectrum through the user’s natural head movements, with no image latency or lag time.

A technology demonstration of the Bublcam app concept will be available this week in Epson Booth 523 at the SIGGRAPH Conference in Vancouver, August 12-14, 2014.

As the only fully spherical consumer camera in the world, the Bublcam features real-time image stitching, self-calibration and image stabilization, a four-camera, tetrahedral design for zero blind spots and live video streaming. The camera also offers professional controls, including HDR, white balance, contrast and gamma, as well as built-in APIs and analytics to measure live stream traffic, all in a device the size of a baseball.

“The Epson Moverio smart glasses’ features, including built-in gyroscope, accelerometer and magnetic compass for head-motion tracking and hands-free navigation, offers an exciting new viewing platform for Bublcam users,” said Sean Ramsay, CEO of Bubl. “This collaboration opens the door to an unlimited variety of amazing viewer experiences.”

“The Bublcam app will offer a never-before-seen perspective for Moverio BT-200 smart glasses users, enabling untold new applications in both the consumer and enterprise spaces,” said Eric Mizufuka, product manager, New Ventures for Epson America, and Moverio developer program lead. “We’re excited to be working with Bubl as they join a growing list of leading-edge companies building apps for our Moverio smart glasses platform.”

Initially launched as a Kickstarter project, Bubl provides hardware and software technology solutions for the advancement of spherical content creation.

Leveraging Epson’s patented core technologies, the Moverio BT-200 offers an unparalleled binocular smart glasses experience optimized for augmented reality applications. Micro projectors located on each side of the eyeglasses project transparent overlays of digital content directly in the user’s field of view over the real-world environment. In addition to the Moverio BT-200’s sensors for head-motion tracking and hands-free navigation, the smart glasses include a front-facing camera for video and image capture also detects real-world markers for augmented reality (AR) applications.

The Epson Moverio BT-200 smart glasses are available through select online retailers and direct from Epson for MSRP $699.99. For more information regarding the Moverio Developer Program, please visit the dedicated site here.
