GoldieBlox Joins The 88Th Annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade®

GoldieBlox will inspire the next generation of engineers as they bring the magic of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) to life on a new float debuting this November

OAKLAND, Calif. and NEW YORK, Oct. 2, 2014 — (PRNewswire) —   GoldieBlox, the award-winning toy company out to inspire girls today announced with Macy's, that they will bring the magic of design and engineering to life in the 88th Annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade®. Appropriately named "The Girl-Powered Spinning Machine," the new GoldieBlox float will make its way down the streets of New York City, complete with larger-than-life elements from Goldie's world.

"Our dream at GoldieBlox is to inspire every girl to reach her full potential, and we definitely like to dream big," said Debbie Sterling, Founder & CEO of the company. "The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is an iconic celebration and we're thrilled to join the line-up this November with the first-ever float that is specifically designed to showcase the principles of engineering. Macy's Parade floats are the ultimate engineering spectacle, and relatable to kids everywhere. We can't wait!"

Designed and built by the engineers and craftspeople at Macy's Parade Studio working closely with the GoldieBlox team, The Girl-Powered Spinning Machine will transform GoldieBlox toys into larger-than-life form, in an elaborate, creative and brightly colored machine. The float built as three distinct stages, uses kid power to spin, pull and rotate a myriad of elements from giant pinwheels and parachutes to jogging wheels. Featuring Goldie herself at the helm of the action, the float also showcases Goldie's dog Nacho and her cat Benjamin Cranklin, along with a host of her friends.

"Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade has always been about sparking the imagination through creativity, magic and fun," said Amy Kule, Executive Producer of Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. "The new GoldieBlox float is an aspiring engineer's dream, perfectly combining Macy's Parade's signature creativity and artistry, with real-world engineering practices that will inspire girls and boys to learn more about engineering and technology."

GoldieBlox hopes to spread the message that while girls may love princesses, they can build their own castles too, or their own parade floats! Determined to level the playing field for girls in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), GoldieBlox is on a mission to disrupt pink toy aisles everywhere and get girls building.

STEM careers, and engineering and tech in particular, are the fastest growing and highest paid jobs in the country. Studies show that girls tend to lose interest in these fields as young as age eight. Knowing that girls learn more effectively through storytelling, GoldieBlox pairs a construction set with a story about Goldie, the girl inventor, and her friends who build simple machines to overcome obstacles. In just under two years, GoldieBlox has made its way from Kickstarter to Toys 'R' Us, Amazon and more than 1,000 local retailers across the U.S., Canada, Australia, and the U.K.

Gearing up for the holiday season, GoldieBlox recently doubled their product offering, adding three new sets and expanding their piece library from six to more than 40, all available at GoldieBlox.com.

  • "GoldieBlox and the Movie Machine" teaches kids how to build a zoetrope, a pre-cinema animation device, to bring Goldie and her friends to life.
  • "GoldieBlox and the Builder's Survival Kit" is the ultimate builder's expansion pack for the most adventurous innovators! With more than 190 pieces, the kit offers hours of fun and endless building possibilities.
  • "GoldieBlox Zipline Action Figure" brings Goldie to life for the first time as an action figure! More than just a doll, her articulated shoulders, hips, knees and joints are designed for adventure – zipping down an impressive 13' zipline!

The company is focused on expanding the play experience of their toys, entering the digital space, and evolving Goldie and her friends into widely recognized role models for girls.

GoldieBlox's Girl-Powered Spinning Machine float will debut in the 88th Annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, which airs nationwide on NBC-TV, on Thursday, November 27, 2014 from 9:00 AM12:00 PM, in all time zones.

About GoldieBlox
Debbie Sterling founded GoldieBlox in 2012 after recognizing the need for more women in engineering and learning that girls typically lose interest in math and science as early as age eight. Seizing the opportunity to inspire future innovators before this critical juncture, Sterling designed GoldieBlox to cultivate young girls' ingenuity and get them building.

GoldieBlox is an award-winning toy company where girls follow the story of Goldie, a girl inventor, and build alongside her. As girls read along, they are taught to build simple machines in order to overcome obstacles faced by Goldie and her friends. GoldieBlox toys are sold at thousands of retail locations across the United States, Canada, Australia and the U.K.
