In his presentation, Munro will share his account of, and extensive history with, DFM including key supporters and opponents of the practice, and the difference between winning and losing DFM strategies. He'll share examples of DFM successes and conduct an onsite demo that will quickly show how and why DFM gained its popularity, as well as provide the audience with some quick "lessons learned." Taking current trends a step further, Munro will also discuss the migration and new incarnations of DFM before closing his speech with his thoughts on the future of DFM.
"Often times, I see engineers struggling to fix a problem that is the result of a poor design," Munro said. "Instead of focusing on solving the present problem, I encourage them to eliminate the problem completely by changing the design. This is the simple premise of 'design for manufacturing,' which, when done properly, can dramatically increase a product's quality, cost and efficiency, thereby giving new life to an existing product or concept."
