Local Motors Announces 3D-printed Car Modification Competition

ModMen Challenge to award 3D-printed cars to 12 winning entries

LAS VEGAS — (BUSINESS WIRE) — November 5, 2014 — Local Motors today announces the ModMen Challenge, a bold competition that asks the hot rod and motor vehicle aftermarket community to “hack up” and modify a 3D-printed vehicle, just like they would any other car. The contest starts online, where participants submit design modification proposals designed for and built on the same 3D-printed car model. After an online voting round, 12 “ModMen” winners will be awarded a real 3D-printed vehicle on which to bring their winning designs to life. The ModMen Challenge culminates at SEMA 2015, where all 12 of the modified cars will be presented and judged, with one vehicle emerging victorious as the grand prize winner and title of ultimate “ModMan.”

“From racing, to street, to show, car modification has always been the true soul of vehicle innovation,” said Local Motors Co-founder and CEO John B. Rogers, Jr. “At Local Motors, our goal is to fuel the next great generation of ‘Hot Rodders’ by putting the newest technology in their hands, and the ModMen Challenge does exactly that. These are not just 12 cars customized with aftermarket parts, but a peek into the future of automotive re-imagination. I cannot wait to see how this group pushes the boundary of 3D-printed cars.”

True to its co-creation heritage, Local Motors will draw from selected ModMen Challenge modification entries to explore what premiere models of 3D-printed vehicles designed for on-road usage could look like. Local Motors plans to launch the first line of highway-ready 3D-printed vehicles in 2015.

The ModMen Challenge opens for entries in late January 2015. The 12 winning design modification proposals will be announced in March 2015, with delivery of the 3D-printed cars to winning teams beginning in May 2015. The 12 winning cars will attend SEMA 2015, where Local Motors will display the vehicles and judge the winning modifications. The ModMen Challenge will be held online at LocalMotors.com and is open to the public. To sign-up to be part of the ModMen Challenge, click here.
