SANTA MONICA, Calif., Nov. 21, 2014 — (PRNewswire) — IMAX Corporation (NYSE:IMAX; TSX:IMX) today announced that writer-director John Woo's grandiose two-part 3D film The Crossing will be digitally re-mastered in the immersive IMAX® 3D format and released by Le Vision in IMAX® theatres in China. The Crossing, which was produced by Lion Rock Productions and financed by four of the most influential movie studios in China – Galloping Horse, Le Vision, China Film Group and Huayi Brothers – reunites stars Takeshi Kaneshiro and Ziyi Zhang, both of whom starred in House of Flying Daggers (2004). The Crossing also stars Song Hye-kyo (The Grandmaster), Huang Xiaoming (The White-Haired Witch of Lunar Kingdom) and Tong Dawei (Red Cliff). The film was written by Woo, Su Chaopin and Chen Chinghui, with a script by Wang Hui-ling.

"I have always been a huge fan of IMAX, and I am thrilled to have an IMAX version of my film" said Woo. "The Crossing is set in a tumultuous period in recent Chinese history; and a lot of the spectacular scenes, like the two battle scenes and the sinking of the 'Taiping,' are shown to maximum effect on the IMAX screen."

Shot on location throughout mainland China, Inner Mongolia, Taipei and the south of Taiwan, the two-part film took 14 months to finish production. The film takes place during the Chinese Revolution in the late 1940s when many couples fled China, crossing the Taiwan Strait to Taiwan. In 1949, the sinking of the steamer "Taiping" led to the deaths of more than 1,500 passengers and crew.

"The Crossing is an epic event film perfectly suited for The IMAX Experience®," said Greg Foster, Senior Executive Vice President, IMAX Corp. and CEO of IMAX Entertainment. "Not only is The Crossing an ideal fit for us thematically, it's also a strategically important addition to our film slate as it runs through the Chinese New Year and beyond."

The IMAX® 3D release of The Crossing will be digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience® with proprietary IMAX DMR® (Digital Re-mastering) technology. The crystal-clear images, coupled with IMAX's customized theatre geometry and powerful digital audio, create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie.
