Sanborn Collects Record Volume of Oblique Imagery -- Banner Year Yields More Than 9 Million High-Resolution Images

Colorado Springs, Colo. Jan 2, 2015 —As the applications for oblique aerial imagery continue to expand, The Sanborn Map Company (Sanborn) solidified its industry-leading collection efforts in 2014 by acquiring more than 21,000 square miles of high-resolution oblique imagery comprising more than 9 million images.

“From flight planning to data collection to image processing, our 2014 oblique missions were firing on all cylinders,” says Jason Caldwell, Sanborn vice president of business development and sales. “As Sanborn’s customers continued to benefit from and discover new ways to use our high-quality oblique imagery, the Sanborn team truly responded to their needs in world-class fashion.”

Sanborn’s Oblique Imagery Solutions products comprise aerial imagery that gives users multiple views of any location. The company captures the imagery with five separate state-of-the-art cameras at once, resulting in the highest quality oblique data available in the marketplace today. The imagery is georeferenced and delivered to users in a format that makes it easy to view, analyze and use effectively.

Oblique imagery currently is most commonly used for first response and emergency management planning and operations; urban and community planning; utility maintenance and management; and insurance and property assessment applications. Its usefulness for emergency response was underscored in July 2014, when the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) used oblique imagery for the first time ever to document damage, erosion, and potential impacts to navigation after Hurricane Arthur roared up the coast of North Carolina and Virginia.
