An Interview With Joh Li, CTO of ZW3D CAD/CAM

GUANGZHOU, China — (BUSINESS WIRE) — March 10, 2015 — With the coming of ZWSOFT GPC 2015 (Global Partner Conference), Samuel Chen, a journalist from a well-known Chinese CAD/CAM industry magazine - Mold & Die Project, had an interview with one of the GPC’s keynote speakers, Joh Li, CTO of ZW3D.

Samuel: I’ve learned that ZWSOFT began the ZW3D business since the acquisition of VX in 2010. What progresses have you made in ZW3D over these years?

Joh: I can say that the overall R&D strength of ZW3D has substantially improved and there have been essential changes in products. Specifically, the ease-of-use has changed completely. Apart from standard files such as Parasolid and ACIS, ZW3D can communicate with files like Catia, ProE, and NX as well. Besides, ZW3D adopts Windows UI, enabling entry-level users to master basic functionalities even in a few hours. Technologically, we have our own core technology. With our independent kernel, OverdriveTM, we quickly developed unique functions like Morphing and Wrapping. Plus, the graphical display has been accelerated by over 10 times.

Samuel: It seems ZW3D has grown a lot. Then, in this year’s new edition, ZW3D 2015, what can we expect?

Joh: In ZW3D 2015, we have noticeable enhancements on CAD & CAM modules. Just take some examples. For modeling, we’ve built a brand new history and assembly tree to ensure the fluency of history-based modeling; for surface design, we’ve exploited a new method to generate surface with greatly improved quality; for CAM, we focus on customer application scenes with huge improvements in the efficiency of surface machining.

Besides, in this edition, you can find lots of partner applications, like Keyshot for rendering, FastBlank for sheet metal, Simwise for FEA, Eureka for robotic arms, etc.

Samuel: So how did all these improvements come?

Joh: Most of our improvements are made to bring better user experience. We value their opinions. Actually, many active users have been involved in product development and provided numerous sharp insights. For instance, to offer more professional rendering, we incorporated the Keyshot module into the ZW3D interface, even though our original rendering functions are good enough.

Samuel: What’s your product development strategy for the next 3 to 5 years?

Joh: Actually, we are concerned about every aspect which may carry us a step forward. For further development, much attention will be paid to perfection of user experience, upgrade of our kernel and the efficiency of application in niche industries.

For user experience, we will take advantage of all-in-one CAD/CAM to conduct technology upgrade, like further combining direct modeling with historical modeling.

For OverdriveTM kernel, we will make it more powerful. As for niche industries, ZWSOFT will strengthen the cooperation with partners in different niche areas.
