PRC format as ISO standard enables long-term use

Darmstadt, April 20, 2015 – PROSTEP AG, which has its headquarters in Darmstadt, announced today that the Product Representation Compact (PRC) format has been recognized as an international ISO standard (ISO 14739). PRC is used, among other things, to embed 3D models from commonly used CAD systems in 3D PDF documents and visualize them with Adobe Reader. It also supports the exchange of 3D model data in document-based workflows, such as requests for proposals and changes for example.

Unlike the tessellated U3D format, which can also be embedded in 3D PDFs, PRC is an accurate, highly compressed format that can be extracted again as a STEP file for further processing in the supply chain. It describes the embedded 3D models as exact solids, so-called B-REPs or boundary representations.

Publication and standardization of the PRC format provides a high level of investment protection to companies deciding to use 3D PDF technology. At the same time, their intellectual property remains available as they can access the models again at any time independently of a specific software vendor and its IT tools.

"ISO standardization is an important step towards achieving the long-term use of 3D PDF technology in companies in manufacturing industry, for example for the long-term archiving of documents with 3D content," stresses Peter Pfalzgraf, head of the Products business unit at PROSTEP AG. PROSTEP is the only vendor whose tools and solutions for creating 3D PDF documents are based on the original technology from Adobe Systems.
