ASIA…Get set to take centre stage at the World Architecture Festival 2015

The global architecture and design community's most influential awards programme

Winner: WAF World Building of the Year 2014 - A21 Studio’s The Chapel, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Apr 24, 2015 -- The World Architecture Festival (WAF) is calling for award entries from architects and related design and development professionals throughout Asia to submit their projects by 22 May 2015.

Asia architects are invited to follow in the footsteps of former award-winning practices and showcase their talent on a global stage. A staggering 223 completed and future projects were submitted from Asian practices in 2014, the quality and calibre of which provided exceptional and highly animated content for three days of live judging critiques - culminating in Vietnamese architectural practice A21 Studio winning WAF World Building of the Year 2014, with its beautifully designed Chapel in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

The Chapel is a community space in a new urban ward on the edge of the City, designed as a ‘chapel for the people’ where locals could gather and engage in social activities – conferences, weddings, exhibitions, or just for a coffee.

A simple lightweight steel frame clad in white metal sheeting surrounded by landscaped gardens, it resembles a religious space. Accents of brightly coloured curtains and natural materials animate the single white space. Modest in scale and execution, the project exemplified the transforming potential of architecture within a marginalised community.

A21 Studios architectural take on a new concept of ‘social modernity’ provided, not only, a winning formula for the community it served but, resonated highly with the WAF Super Jury winning in order to win the highly coveted WAF Award.

Speaking on A21’s scheme, the WAF Super Jurors commented: “This was a project that embraces history and modernity – creating dialogue in the process. It created maximum effect with minimal (often recycled) materials, producing an unexpected change of pace in its urban context. The architect has found poetry in the mundane.”

WAF provides not only the chance to win a global architectural accolade, but also opens the door to international media coverage, peer and client recognition, and the potential for exciting new commissions.

Commenting on last years winning submission Toan Nghiem, principal of A21 Studio said: “Winning the Award has been very inspirational in terms of refreshing our practice and our architecture. WAF, has helped us to become globally recognised, and provided us the chance to meet and talk to different people, communities and industry sectors. This has been very important to us as a growing practice looking for new opportunities around the world.”

This year’s World Architecture Awards will once again be hosted in Singapore at Suntec City from the 2 – 6 November 2015 - AECOM’s impressive steel-framed Convention and Exhibition Centre. The World Architecture Festival Awards Gala Dinner will take place on the evening of Friday 6 November where category winners will compete for the ultimate accolades of World Building of the Year and Future Project of the Year 2015, which have the power to transform careers, promoting practices to a global audience.

Commenting on this year’s Awards, WAF Programme Director Paul Finch said:
‘This is an exciting time for the Awards, with no predictions possible about this year’s result. Since our launch in 2008 we’ve had entries from over 70 countries around the world, and award winning schemes of every shape, size and type. Every year we find new talent competing with established names, and that is a big part of the attraction of the event, not just for entrants, but for delegates too.’
