San Francisco Bay Area Celebrates 'Maker Week' May 11-17 Ahead of 10th Anniversary of Maker Faire Bay Area

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwired - May 11, 2015) - Maker Faire Bay Area 2015, the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth, celebrates "Maker Week" across the San Francisco Bay Area this week, May 11-17, 2015, leading up to the 10th anniversary of the Faire on Saturday-Sunday, May 16-17. Maker Week will host meetups, parties, networking events, forums, and more for local Makers, Makers in town for Maker Faire Bay Area, and leaders of the Maker Movement. The schedule of Maker Week events can be found at http://makerfaire.com/bay-area-2015/maker-week/.

In addition, the Cities of San Francisco, Oakland, and San Mateo have declared May 11-17 "Maker Week" in each of their cities, complete with a certificate of honor and proclamations, and events that honor the core values of the Maker Movement-ingenuity, creativity, and a DIY spirit-in their communities. See the cities' "Maker Week" acknowledgments here: http://makerfaire.com/?p=460157.

"We are thrilled to see Maker Week grow beyond the immediate locale to be observed across the entire Bay Area," said Sherry Huss, co-founder of Maker Faire and vice president of Maker Media. "The support the Bay Area gives to Makers of all kinds, skill levels, and interests is incredible, and echoes the backing that Maker Faire has provided to the Maker community. The Maker Week city announcements and events demonstrate that support in a way that is tangible to Maker Faire and all local Makers. We are excited to partner with these cities to further the Maker Movement and celebrate Makers."

Maker Week kicks off with MakerCon, a conference by and for Makers produced by Maker Media, at the Palace of Fine Arts and iHangar in San Francisco, California, on Tuesday-Wednesday, May 12-13. MakerCon is the leading forum for Makers at the forefront of the maker movement to connect and learn best practices on how to make things and get them to market, from new technologies to manufacturing models to funding methods. MakerCon is supported by a number of top corporations including Sprout by HP.

About Maker Faire
Maker Faire is the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth-a family-friendly showcase of invention, creativity, and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the Maker Movement. It's a place where people of all ages and backgrounds gather together to show what they are making and share what they are learning.

Maker Faire celebrated 131 Faires in 2014 alone and has reached over 2.3 million attendees globally since it launched in San Mateo, CA, in 2006, less than a year after the publication of the first Make: magazine in 2005. The ninth annual Maker Faire Bay Area welcomed some 1,100 makers and 130,000 attendees. World Maker Faire New York, the other flagship event, has grown in five years to 830-plus Makers and 85,000 attendees. Atlanta, Detroit, Kansas City, Milwaukee, Orlando, Pittsburgh, Silver Springs, San Diego, Paris, Rome, Oslo, Newscastle (UK), Berlin, Hannover, Trondheim, Seoul, Taipei, Tokyo, Singapore, and Shenzhen host our "featured" larger-scale Maker Faires, and community-driven, independently organized Mini Maker Faires inspire and ignite creative communities everywhere around the United States and internationally.

Located in San Francisco, CA, Maker Media has been widely credited with jumpstarting the worldwide Maker Movement, which has been a transforming force in innovation, culture, and education. In addition to publishing Make: magazine and producing Maker Faire, Maker Media develops "getting started" kits and books it sells through its Maker Shed store as well as other retail channels. Maker Media is based in San Francisco, and has offices in Sebastopol, CA and at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco.
