WASHINGTON, June 5, 2015 — (PRNewswire) —   FOX Architects won an award June 4 at the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Northern Virginia Chapter's 2015 Awards Celebration. FOX Architects was recognized for their design of 1400 Crystal Drive, located in Arlington, Virginia. The building was previously honored with an Award of Excellence from the Northern Virginia chapter of NAIOP.

1400 Crystal Drive, AIA Award of Merit for Commercial Architecture

1400 Crystal Drive is a new, state-of-the-art office building that "recycled" a 1968 structure that had out-lived its useful life span. The building was stripped to its structural frame and subsequently expanded by 27,000 square feet. A new facade, new building systems, new public spaces and new amenity areas all work in concert to reposition this office building to a new, "trophy" status. The renovated central core enhanced interior planning, expanding the number of corner offices and improved the overall building massing. A full-height curtain wall glass permits natural daylighting into the work environment, as well as better views out, over the Potomac River, to the Federal City beyond. A state-of-the-art DOAS HVAC system is one several design strategies that increased the quality of the work environment while also making the building more sustainable. The FOX team, led by J.P. Spickler, AIA, included: Derek Wood, AIA, Westley Enterline, AIA and Anna Major. The consultant team included: Rathgeber Goss Associates for Structural Engineering, Vanderweil for MEP Engineering, Vika for Civil Engineering, Walsh Colucci for zoning and legal work, and Whiting-Turner Construction.
