3D Surface Modeling For Architectural CAD Services

June 10, 2015 -- CAD 3D modeling is a very powerful tool for the designers enabling them to conceptualize a design in totality. The article discusses various types of CAD 3D models and throws light on the 3D surface modeling in detail.

CAD 3D Modeling is a very powerful tool in the armory of The AEC Associates   http://theaecassociates.com/ Architectural CAD services http://theaecassociates.com/architectural-cad-bim-services that enables them to come up with excellent designs and superlative drawings. Architectural CAD services can choose from three types of 3D models depending on their requirements: wireframe models, surface models and solid models. Let us discuss in brief about the types of 3D models here

  • Wireframe modeling:
The simplest form of 3D modeling often used to begin the conceptualizing of the design is called wireframe modeling. This form of modeling provides only an extended form of 2D orthographic projections and is easiest to handle, however, it also has certain limitations. One needs to edit these models to remove extraneous lines and add center and hidden lines to make sure that the drawing conforms to accepted norms

  • Surface modeling:
A form of 3D modeling that is more complex than wireframe modeling is called surface modeling. These models can be obtained by adding surface to a wireframe model and are used mostly when exterior surfaces of a structure are considered more important but the interior spaces are not yet to be considered. Let us discuss 3D surface models in a little more detail:

3D surface modeling is a technique of representing solid looking structures or objects in a lifelike fashion. This type of model is more sophisticated and complex than a wireframe model but not as complete as a 3D solid model. You cannot slice open a surface model like a solid model and this causes certain limitations. Even if an object has a proper appearance in the surface modeling, it can still be geometrically incorrect.

As is evident, a surface model simulates an object only externally, hence it’s not possible to get a complete view of a structure. This is why, it is used only for the projects where exteriors have more significance. As mentioned above, a surface model can be obtained from a wireframe model whenever required by adding surfaces to the wireframe structure.

  • Limitations of 3D surface modeling:

Since surface modeling is not as sophisticated or complete as 3D solid modeling, it has its own limitations. This model cannot display the internal features of a structure, so there can be a clash of various design elements. This possibility increases when a very complex structure is being used and a more complete model is needed by Architectural CAD drafting services. We can infer that both wireframe and surface models prove inadequate in case a complete representation of the structure is required or very complex forms are involved. Architectural CAD services may require 3D solid modeling for design and drafting purposes when more complexities are involved.
