The American Institute of Architects Launch Film Challenge to Showcase Architecture’s Impact on Society

“Look Up” Film Challenge Part of the AIA’s Public Awareness Campaign

Washington, D.C. – June 18, 2015 – The American Institute of Architects (AIA) has launched a film challenge to bring together filmmakers and architects to create short films that inspire the world to “look up” and experience a whole new level of appreciation for architects and their positive impact on our society.  Part of the AIA’s multi-year public awareness campaign, the goal of the film challenge is to tell compelling stories about the original thinking architects bring to solving problems - the ability of architects to imagine and visualize, and, literally, look up to find inspiring solutions.

The Look Up Film Challenge is a timed film competition that challenges participants to make a short film about how architects and their work enrich our personal lives and our community—from homes to open spaces—in every city across the country. Submissions will be judged by a panel of AIA members and media professionals, presenting $3,000 in cash prizes and experiential awards, including two roundtrip tickets to Austin, Texas, and badges for the iconic festival, SXSW.

Registration for the film challenge is now open and the competition kicks off on July 17, with winners being awarded in September.

Filmmakers of all levels of experience are tasked with creating 3-5 minute videos that demonstrate the impact the work of architects have on issues ranging from community development and affordable housing to resiliency and sustainability.  Filmmakers can find inspiration for their films through personal connections or by contacting an AIA Chapter in their region for content leads.
