EULF Transportation pilot is first to test European Location Framework delivery platform

Seamless, cross-border geospatial information delivered via the European Location Framework is helping to speed up the exchange of safety-related road data.

Jul 1, 2015 -- The European Union Location Framework (EULF) Transportation pilot scheme is the first to test the cloud-based infrastructure which is providing access to road information from public authorities in Norway and Sweden. The data will then be assessed by commercial map application developers, TomTom and HERE who have signed the first European Location Framework evaluation licences.

Olaf Østensen, European Location Framework (ELF) Project Coordinator said: “This is a really exciting milestone in the development of a single source of dependable geospatial information for Europe and the first time the delivery platform has been tested outside the ELF Project.”

“As a result of the Transportation pilot, commercial map providers will, in the future, be able to access the most up-to-date road network information, such as speed limits and access restrictions, which means users of their navigation systems and databases will benefit from improved data quality and accuracy.”

The European Location Framework is a unique user-friendly gateway to dependable pan-European geospatial information. It takes INSPIRE to the next level by providing the practical means for delivering operational cross-border and pan-European services.

By harmonising European geospatial information, it will help the free movement of interoperable data within a digital single market and deliver cost savings by maximising the reuse of public data and avoiding the costly development of duplicate services.

The EULF Transportation pilot builds on the requirements of the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) Directive and the INSPIRE Directive and uses the TN-ITS protocol.

EULF is managed by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) and supported by the Interoperability Solutions for Public Administrations (ISA) Programme.
