World Architecture Festival: India’s architects take to the world stage at WAF 2015

Two architectural highlights from Indian practices: Completed project Nazrul Titha, Kolkata by Adin Design Studio and Reservoir by Sanjay Puri Architects in Rajasthan, shortlisted in the Future Projects, Office category

Aug 12, 2015 -- India’s emerging architecture takes to the stage this November in a bid to win the coveted title of World Building of the Year 2015 at this year’s World Architecture Festival in Singapore. The four Indian shortlisted projects will compete with competition from established and upcoming studios, including the likes of Norman Foster, Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaas and Herzog & de Meuron.

Located in Kochi, Kolkata and Mumbai, the four shortlisted projects delivered by Indian practitioners are testament to a new, contemporary architectural language being delivered across Asia and the Indian subcontinent, making this year’s festival a must attend event for architects and designers who wish to support their Indian colleagues and celebrate Indian architecture.

Projects include Reservoir by Sanjay Puri Architects, whose office development in Rajasthan utilises the steeply contoured landmass to respond to the regions exceptional climatic conditions and Kolkata’s Nazrul Tirtha Museum and Academic Research Centre by Abin Design Studio where the architects have created a breathing space within the city’s dense urban fabric based on the philosophy and ideals of the revolutionary Bengali poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.  Both will be competing against each other and the best of the rest of the world at the annual festival in Singapore in November.

Indian finalists will present their projects alongside their global peers in the furiously paced professional critiques, open for all festival delegates to watch. These ‘crits’ will be judged by a stellar cast of over 70 industry practitioners, which this year includes Indian Architect Sanjay Puri amongst other high profile judges Kai-Uwe Bergman from BIG and Serina Hijjas from Hijjas Katsuri.

WAF programme director Paul Finch commented: “We are delighted with the diversity and exemplar quality of Indian submissions this year. Our international juries are in for a tough time deliberating on the category winners. We look forward to another inspirational event in Singapore this November.”

Sachin Shetty, Principal Architect, iNT-HAB Architecture and design studio commented on WAF that the festival is, “Great exposure to the world of architecture and gives us an idea of where we are as a practice.”

Festival attendees will have to plan their time carefully, as alongside the 300 project presentations they can learn from over 50 hours of seminar content and be inspired by a gallery exhibiting projects from over 40 countries. After its jam-packed days, WAF plays host to an extensive schedule of evening events including exclusive site visits, a PechaKucha reception, parties, documentary screenings and a celebratory gala dinner.

Running alongside WAF is its sister event INSIDE which will showcase 2015’s most groundbreaking interiors projects. Visitors will be able to view this year’s best in class interiors nominations from leading practices and designers across four continents.
