ViaSat to License Its Digital Signal Processing and Forward Error Correction IP Cores for Next-Generation 100G Optical Transport

ViaSat Low Power IP Cores are Fully Verified and Proven for 100G Optical Channels; New Licensing Program Set to Speed Development and Deployment of New Networking Technologies for Today's Highly Connected World

VALENCIA, Spain, Sept. 28, 2015 — (PRNewswire) —   ViaSat Inc. (NASDAQ: VSAT), a global broadband services and technology company, today announced it is now licensing its digital signal processing (DSP) and forward error correction (FEC) cores for 100G optical transport. Traditionally, ViaSat had only licensed its 100G FEC cores; however, overwhelming interest in a low power Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) core for the metro market, has created demand for ViaSat to license a development kit inclusive of a System Software Model (SSM) for simulation and its ASIC IP cores (DSP and FEC). ViaSat will be discussing these products and its new licensing models at the European Conference and Exhibition on Optical Communication (ECOC) beginning September 28, in Valencia, Spain.

The demand for more data bandwidth from consumer broadband, mobile data and the Internet of Things market has driven a need for 100G optical modules and PHY semiconductor components across varied networking equipment, from metro, long-haul and edge networks to data center and networking system cores. The ViaSat DSP and FEC cores are designed to meet this demand as they are tuned for low power consumption and low latency systems. ViaSat offers an advanced turbo product code (TPC) with soft-decision coding to provide up to 11.4 dB net electrical coding gain (NECG) for improved performance in high data rate, long haul and metro applications. The algorithm of the ViaSat TPC core is optimized for 100 Gbps data rate and is scalable beyond 100 Gbps for use with higher order modulations (e.g., QPSK, 8PSK, (n-QAM) and even orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)). The IP cores also interoperate with some ASICs available in the market today.

"The demand for 100G networking, driven by consumers' insatiable demand for more data, requires networking system equipment manufacturers and suppliers to more rapidly develop and deploy new networking systems focused on higher performance, lower power and lower latency technologies," said Russell Fuerst, vice president and general manager, ViaSat. "By licensing our robust system software model and advanced IP cores for 100G optical transport, we can enable the networking ecosystem by simulating a customer's environment that reflects the DSP compensation results. Our DSP cores are used to electronically compensate for optical fiber channel impairments and can be customized for each customer's particular channel model or target market. With in-depth results, 100G systems can be brought to market in a much more rapid timeframe."

ViaSat has built an extensive portfolio of DSP and FEC cores that have demonstrated excellent industry performance and widespread acceptance. The FEC and TPC cores are fully verified and available in ASIC and FPGA netlists.
