The series of four courses is designed for prospective personal property appraisers and focuses on valuation theory and methods common to many areas of expertise. The classes are of interest not only to those working with fine and decorative arts and antiques but also with other types of personal property, including vintage automobiles, books and manuscripts, oriental carpets and more. The Principles of Valuation course of study draws students from a wide variety of backgrounds and offers an opportunity to meet and collaborate with individuals with a range of expertise. Students interested in accreditation by the American Society of Appraisers must take these four classes in sequence, and must then take and pass the Uniform Standards or Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP).

"ASA courses in personal property valuation support the goal of offering professionals the knowledge they need to advance their careers and broaden their skills," says Sandra J. Tropper, ASA. "We are delighted to begin ASA appraisal studies classes at the 621 Huntington Avenue campus of MassArt." Tropper, an instructor and past education chair for the Society's personal property discipline, says: "We look forward to working with MassArt to help prospective and current appraisers meet the increasingly rigorous qualifications demanded by the public."

To inaugurate the collaboration with ASA, MassArt will hold an open house and special event on Saturday, December 5, 2015, from 1-5 PM. The event will feature introductory presentations by faculty and local experts and a series of open dialogues with appraisers and experts in different fields including art historians and artists. Presenters will address the questions of 'What is appraising?' and 'What are appraisal studies?' and delve into a series of illustrated and hands-on lectures and conversations exploring the interrelationship between appraising art and antiques, art history, conservation and preservation, the art market and art collecting.

The upcoming schedule of MassArt Appraisal Studies events and courses includes:
