CCE’s Engineers Improve Safety of Key Component of a Crane Assembly

Finite Element Analysis Used to Modify Design for Higher Factor of Safety

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. Dec. 8, 2015 -- CCE, a leading mechanical and electromechanical design, engineering, and manufacturing services provider, improves the safety of a key component of a load bearing assembly using Finite Element Analysis (FEA).

CCE’s engineering services model is designed to maximize benefits from offshore engineering, while mitigating risk.  By using CCE’s engineers, clients can increase productivity and innovation by freeing their own engineers to focus on core activities. In addition, clients can also reduce costs by leveraging lower-cost offshore resources.  Intellectual property is safeguarded, as CCE is a U.S.-based company. When working with CCE, clients can always expect the engineering design services team to put a high emphasis on adding value to projects, whenever possible.

CCE’s engineering design services team recently completed a FEA project involving linear static analysis of a lower hook block assembly, to which the hook of a hoist or crane is attached; these assemblies typically consist of a steel enclosure housing a number of sheaves/pulleys that carry the ropes/chains that facilitate the lifting of a load.  The scope of the project was to apply a fixed load to a specific cylindrical surface within the assembly to determine the Factor of Safety.

CCE’s analysis showed that the assembly failed to meet the minimum required Factor of Safety.  After reviewing the results, CCE’s team took the initiative to recommend key design changes to the assembly to bring the Factor of Safety in compliance.  The client implemented the design changes and gave an “excellent” satisfaction rating to CCE for the additional value provided.

As part of the engineering workflow, CCE’s work order management system, PowerLink, was used to enable timely, efficient collaboration between the client, CCE’s on-site coordinator, and the dedicated offshore engineering team. PowerLink provided visibility and accountability over the work done by the remote team, which kept the project on-time and on-budget.

About PowerLink:

PowerLink is a web-based work order management system that allows users to define and manage engineering and manufacturing tasks that are executed at remote locations.  All of CCE’s clients are provided secure, individual logins to PowerLink in order to help manage their offshore initiatives.  PowerLink has many features; process traceability at all times, daily visibility of the offshore work, prioritized work orders for ease in managing delivery schedules, and more!  In addition, communication is more simple and secure, unlike asynchronous email messages and open ftp data transfers.
