USGIF Accepting Applications for 2016 Scholarship Program

Foundation opens annual scholarship program along with inaugural remote sensing scholarship

Herndon, Virginia - Feb. 10, 2016 — The United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation (USGIF) is now accepting applications for its 2016 Scholarship Program. Scholarship applications can be found at USGIF’s website and are due no later than April 22, 2016.

The program provides promising students studying the geospatial sciences or a related field with scholarship awards to further the advancement of the geospatial intelligence tradecraft. In 2015, $99,000 in scholarships was awarded to 24 recipients. Since 2004 when the scholarship program began, $891,000 in scholarships has been awarded to more than 180 students.

"The quality of the students who are working toward careers in GEOINT is just outstanding, and some of the research being done by the graduate students is very cutting edge, said Neil Billings, chair of theUSGIF Scholarship Subcommittee. “I'm glad USGIF hosts this scholarship program and that I can give back to my profession by helping select scholarship recipients."

Graduating high school seniors, undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students studying geospatial intelligence, geography, political science, computer science, biology, anthropology, and any other fields in the natural and social sciences are encouraged to apply for a USGIF scholarship.

USGIF will also offer a new scholarship for the first time this year in partnership with Riverside Research—a nonprofit company primarily serving the defense and the intelligence communities. The $10,000 Ken Miller Scholarship for Advanced Remote Sensing Applications will annually be awarded to one master’s degree student who is in or planning to enter the defense or intelligence community. The Ken Miller Scholarship is funded by sales from the Riverside Research-authored textbook, “The Phenomenology of Intelligence-focused Remote Sensing.” It is named for Kenneth W. Miller, who is known as a founding father of measurement and signatures intelligence (MASINT).

“We’re excited by the opportunity to partner with member company Riverside Research to offer this new scholarship for remote sensing students,” said USGIF CEO Keith Masback. “USGIF is ultimately powered by its Member Organizations and volunteers, and this is a superb example of what we can accomplish for our Community when we work collectively toward the greater good.”
