Patent Awarded for 3D Terrain Maps in PDF

Innovation in 3D Terrain Data Encoding for Interactive 3D PDF Documents improves collaboration and communication for earth scientists and GIS professionals.

London - 23 August, 2016 - Visual Technology Services announces the Grant of Patent US 9,424,662 for Triangle Mesh Compression by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The patent supports the efficient encoding of elevation mesh and 3D terrain maps in PDF documents using the generation implementations in the PDF3D® software systems. The technology is successfully deployed and licensed world-wide in the areas of geospatial environmental survey, earth observation imaging and civil engineering.

"Embedding 3D data representations inside 3D PDF documents is driving the need for high compression in collaborative communication. This method is particularly effective on 3D terrain data" comments Ian Curington, CEO and co-inventor of the new patent."The granting of this important patent strengthens our position as leader in Geospatial 3D PDF production."

The patent covers PDF3D proprietary methods used to compress large 3D terrain maps, typical of digital elevation data, bathymetric survey data, such that the resulting PDF document is up to 60% smaller and more efficient to store and transfer, while enabling the recipient to open and review the 3D model with rotation, pan, zoom, location probe, fly-through interaction.
