The Hydrographic Society UK Launches Alan Ingham Student Award Scheme

Dec 12, 2016 -- The Hydrographic Society UK, which also maintains an overseas membership drawn from nearly 45 countries, has launched an annual student and graduate paper Award scheme dedicated to the memory of Alan Ingham, founder member of the original organisation in 1972 who was a prominent educationalist and noted author as well as one of Britain’s leading landscape artists.

Open to bona fide students and recent graduates on relevant BSc, MSc and PhD courses in the UK and Ireland, the scheme is for the best adjudged dissertation paper on any hydrographic or related topic concerned with research, innovation or application ventures.  A prize of £500 and a framed certificate is available to the winning candidate, with a 1500-2000 word version of the dissertation being published in The Society’s popular quarterly journal, Soundings.  There are also up to  two runners-up prizes each worth £150 together with framed certificates and a joint feature article in Soundings.

The successful winning author will also be eligible for nominated entry to the International Federation of Hydrographic Societies’ (IFHS) own student award scheme with the chance to win £1500 in addition to free attendance and up to £1000 travel and subsistence costs incurred at the organisation’s next three-day Hydro conference usually attended by 300-400 world delegates;  if successful he or she would also be invited to present their dissertation as part of main conference proceedings.

Completed entry forms for the inaugural 2017 scheme, duly endorsed by relevant tutors or lecturers and accompanied by a 400-word summary of proposed dissertations, are required by no later than 31 January.  Short-listed candidates will be  subsequently required to submit their 1500-2000 word entries for considered publication in Soundings.  The eventual winner will be notified in mid-April.

Full details together with official entry forms can be downloaded from the Alan Ingham Award page on The Hydrographic Society UK’s website at www.ths.org.uk.
