America Makes and ANSI Release Preliminary Final Draft of Additive Manufacturing Standardization Roadmap for Comment

NEW YORK, Dec. 14, 2016 — (PRNewswire) —   America Makes, the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute, andthe American National Standards Institute (ANSI) have released for public review and comment a preliminary final draft of the AMSC Standardization Roadmap for Additive Manufacturing (Version 1.0) being developed by the America Makes & ANSI Additive Manufacturing Standardization Collaborative (AMSC). Final publication of the document is targeted for February 2017.

This request specifically invites comments that represent critical revisions and/or needed clarifications on what is presented in the document. While all comments are welcome, the AMSC reserves the right to hold disposition of comments in reserve for a future iteration of the document if they cannot be addressed within the time available. This might include, for example, comments on the document's organization, or issues not addressed. Comments on the draft roadmap may be submitted to Email Contact by January 11, 2017. Use of a comment form is required to better manage and collate comments.

The draft roadmap and related materials may be downloaded as follows:

Formally launched in March 2016, the AMSC was established to coordinate and accelerate the development of industry-wide additive manufacturing standards and specifications consistent with stakeholder needs and thereby facilitate the growth of the additive manufacturing industry. The stakeholders include industry, academia, standards developing organizations, and the federal government. The group is not developing standards; rather, the aim of the draft roadmap is to identify standards needed and foster a more coherent and coordinated approach to standards development for additive manufacturing.

Since the initial organizing meeting at the end of March, AMSC working groups have convened bi-weekly virtual meetings to catalogue existing standards and standards in development, perform a gap analysis on the need for new or revised standards, and draft the roadmap. At the end of September, the AMSC held its second face-to-face meeting to review an initial draft of the roadmap. Following internal working group review and discussion of subsequent drafts, the document is now being released for broader review. The eight AMSC working groups cover design, process and materials (precursor materials, process control, post-processing, and finished material properties), qualification and certification, nondestructive evaluation, and maintenance.
